Investigation of the Relationship Between Athletic Identity and Imagery in Athletics Athletes Through Canonical Correlation Analysis

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the relationship between athlete identity levels and sport imagery among track and field athletes through canonical correlation analysis. Athletics is a sport discipline that requires a high level of mental preparation and performance; therefore, athlete identity and sport imagery play a crucial role in athletes’ performance-related processes. Investigating the association between these two constructs within the context of athletics is expected to provide a novel contribution to the existing literature. Accordingly, a correlational research design, one of the quantitative research methods, was employed. The study sample was determined using a convenience sampling method and consisted of 166 track and field athletes, including 56 females and 110 males. The sample size was established in accordance with the minimum requirements recommended for canonical correlation analysis. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Athlete Identity Scale, and the Sport Imagery Scale. Canonical correlation analysis was utilized due to its capacity to examine not only the relationships among variables but also the potential interactions between variable sets, encompassing characteristics of both correlation and regression analyses. The findings revealed a strong and statistically significant relationship between the athlete identity and sport imagery variable sets (rc = .969, p < .001). The canonical analysis indicated that the athlete identity variable set accounted for 30% of the variance in the sport imagery variable set, whereas the sport imagery variable set explained 22% of the variance in athlete identity. Social identity (loading = −.913) and cognitive imagery (loading = −.700) emerged as the most influential dimensions within the canonical function, demonstrating a strong inverse association. Furthermore, motivational general mastery (loading = .465) was found to be positively associated with athlete identity.

Atletizm Sporcularının Sporcu Kimliği ve Sporda İmgeleme Durumları Arasındaki İlişkinin Kanonik Korelasyon Analizi ile İncelenmesi

Abstract

Araştırmada atletizm sporcularının sporcu kimliği düzeyleri ile sporda imgeleme durumları arasındaki ilişkiyi kanonik korelasyon analizi yöntemiyle incelemek amaçlanmıştır. Atletizm, yüksek düzeyde zihinsel hazırlık ve performans gerektiren bir spor branşıdır. Bu nedenle sporcu kimliği ve sporda imgeleme atletlerin performans süreçlerinde önemli rol oynamaktadır. Bu iki değişken arasındaki ilişkinin atletizm sporcularında incelenmesi, alan yazına özgün katkı sunması açısından önemlidir. Bu nedenle nicel araştırma desenlerinden biri olan korelasyonel araştırma yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. Araştırma grubunun belirlenmesinde uygun örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmış ve 56 kadın, 110 erkek olmak üzere toplam 166 atletizm sporcusundan veri toplanmıştır. Örneklem büyüklüğünün belirlenmesinde kanonik korelasyon analizi için gereken minimum örneklem büyüklüğü dikkate alınmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak kişisel bilgi formu, Sporcu kimliği ölçeği ve Sporda imgeleme ölçeği tercih edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde, değişkenler arasındaki ilişkilerin yanı sıra olası etkileşimleri inceleyebilme potansiyeli ile hem korelasyon hem de regresyon analizlerinin kapsamına giren yönleri taşıması sebebiyle kanonik korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, sporcu kimliği ile sporda imgeleme değişken setleri arasında yüksek düzeyde ve anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu belirlenmiştir (rc=.969, p<.001). Kanonik analiz sonucunda sporcu kimliği değişken setinin sporda imgeleme değişken setindeki varyansın %30'unu, sporda imgeleme değişken setinin ise sporcu kimliği değişken setindeki varyansın %22'sini açıkladığı görülmüştür. Analizde en yüksek katkıyı sosyal kimlik (yük=-.913) ve bilişsel imgeleme (yük=-.700) alt boyutları sağlamış olup, bu değişkenler arasında güçlü ve ters yönlü bir ilişki saptanmıştır. Ayrıca motivasyonel genel ustalık boyutunun (yük=.465) sporcu kimliği ile pozitif yönde ilişkili olduğu belirlenmiştir.
