Photovoice Projects with Youth: A Participatory Research Method

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to introduce Photovoice which is a research method and to explore the Photovoice projects with youth in social work practice. Photovoice, is a participatory research method in which individuals reflect the weaknesses and strenghts of the group they live in through photography that reflect tehir own experiences. This method is used as a tool for individual or social change.In Photovoice projects, participants participate in the project to identify, represent and develop their community. It is considered as an empowering method by reflecting the strengths and weaknesses of individuals in the society they live in. First, core principles, theoritical underpinnings and planning steps were investigated. It is based on Paula Freire’s empowering education approach, feminist theory and documentary photography. In addition, the general purposes of a photovoice study were discussed. Then, Photovoice projects held in social work practice with youth were examined. Five projects with youth were examined as examples. Furthermore, four projects that Photovoice method used as a pedagocical tool were also analyzed.

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı bir araştırma yöntemi olan Photovoice yöntemini tanıtmak ve sosyal hizmet alanında gençlerle yürütülen Photovoice projelerinin incelenmesidir. Photovoice, bireylerin kendi deneyimlerini yansıtan fotoğraflar aracılığıyla içinde bulundukları toplumun zayıf ve güçlü yanlarını ortaya koyduğu katılımlı bir araştırma yöntemidir. Bu yöntem, bireysel ya da toplumsal değişim için bir araç olarak kullanılmaktadır. Photovoice projelerinde, katılımcılar içinde bulundukları toplumu tanımlamak, temsil etmek ve geliştirmek üzere projelere dahil olurlar. Photovoice, bireylerin içinde yaşadıkları toplumdaki güçlü ve zayıf yanlarını yansıtmaları yoluyla güçlendirici bir yöntem olarak ele alınmaktadır. Çalışmada öncelikle, Photovoice yönteminin kuramsal temelleri ve uygulama basamakları ele alınmıştır. Photovoice yönteminin kuramsal kökeni; Paula Freire’nin güçlendirmeci eğitim yaklaşımına, feminist teoriye ve belgesel fotoğrafçılığa dayanmaktadır. Ayrıca bir photovoice çalışmasının hangi genel amaçları olduğu ele alınmıştır. Daha sonra ise, sosyal hizmet alanında gençlerle yürütülen Photovoice projeleri incelenmiştir. Sosyal hizmet alanında, gençlerle yürütülen beş örnek projeye yer verilmiştir. Ayrıca bu yöntemin sosyal hizmet eğitiminde eğitsel bir araç olarak kullanıldığı dört farklı proje incelenmiştir.
