New Generation Disease Cyberchondria: Relationship Between Cyberchondria And Health Literacy of Generations in the New Media Age

Abstract

Today, the increasing internet use has revealed new internet diseases (e-diseases) that constitute the main subject of the research. In this study, "cyberchondria" (disease search disease on the internet), which is one of the new internet diseases, has been focused on. In this context, demographic cyberchondria levels and health literacy levels of individuals aged 18-75 living in Istanbul were compared and analyzed in the context of generation theory. The research was carried out according to the general screening model and stratified sampling method was used among the probabilistic sampling types. 1196 people aged 18-75 living in Istanbul "Participant Survey Form", " Cyberchondria Severity Scale (SCO-33)" and "Turkey Health Literacy Scale (Tsoy-32)" was applied. According to the results of this research, the generations were found to be at the "moderate" level of cyberchondrial, and the "problematic / limited" level of health literacy. Some of the findings of the study are as follows: (a) The highest level of cyberchondria among generations is in the Z; (b) Social media users have a higher level of cyberchondria than non-users; (c) As the education level of generations increases, the level of health literacy increases and the level of cyberchondria decreases; (d) The health literacy level of women was found to be at the "Problem / Limited health literacy" level and the level of "Poor health literacy" for men; (e) The level of cyberchondria of those who call the center they applied for health first "family health center" is higher than those who say "state hospital" and "private hospital". This research results is thought that it will contribute to the literature and guide researchers in the fields of "internet diseases and cyberchondria", health literacy "," new media and social media ". In addition, it is considered important in terms of determining the level of cyberchondria, which is a new generation digital disease in the society and which can be evaluated with a psychometric measurement tool, and gives clues about the measures to be taken. It is also important as it is the first study on the relationship between health literacy and cyberchondria in our country.
