An Anatolian Village in Mid 19 th Century: Kuzu Köy
Abstract
This study discusses the social and economic situation of Kuzu Köy which is a village of 50 houses in the middle of 19th century. In the study, Demirci Population Registry dated 1246/1831 and Demirci Temettuat Registered dated 1260/1261 (1844/1845) were used as the primary source. The datum in the registries reveals that main source of revenues of the villagers were agriculture and livestock breeding. It is possible to say that as the agricultural activity, wheat and barley cultivation came into prominence. In addition to these; madder root, acorn and grape were also cultivated products.
As the livestock breeding, cattle-raising and sheep and goat breeding stands out. Cows among the bovine animals and goats among the ovine animals had importance economically. In these years, beekeeping is also performed in the village. It is seen that professions were commonly shaped on agriculture and livestock breeding depending upon the economic structure of village.
It is understood that vergi-yi mahsusa, which was the fundamental tax of Tanzimat reform era, took an important place among the taxes levied from villagers. In addition to this, öşür (Islamic tithe), which was collected from agricultural products, was also among the taxes that villagers paid. With this study, the village life of that era will be revealed starting from Kuzu Köy which is a village of Demirci township of the city of Manisa (Saruhan) in Western Anatolia.
