Evaluation of Perceived Social Support and Medication Adherence in Individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing perceived social support and medication adherence among individuals with chronic kidney disease. Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 143 individuals receiving treatment in the nephrology clinic of a university hospital in Edirne between November 2023 and April 2024. Data were collected using the ‘‘Patient Information Form’’, the ‘‘Medication Adherence Report Scale’’ and the ‘‘Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support’’. Results: The mean score of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support was 48.25±15.76, and the mean score of the Medication Adherence Report Scale was 21.29±4.52. Marital status, number of children, education level, economic status, and living with family showed significant differences in perceived social support (p<0.05). Medication adherence was different according to the presence of comorbidities, education level, and living with family (p<0.05). As patients' perception of social support increased, medication adherence improved (p<0.05). Conclusions: Higher perceived social support had a significant impact on medication adherence. Patients’ social support and medication adherence should be evaluated using a valid and reliable scale. It is recommended that individuals' social support systems be strengthened and supported.
