Abstract

Tuberculosis continues to be a major health problem worldwide. Primary care physicians being in the first place, the approach of health workers, accurate referral of patient and administering treatment are of great importance in the fight against tuberculosis. This study aimed to assess the differences and approaches of primary care physicians in diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. This studyis a descriptive type of study in which data were collected by the survey form prepared by the researchers and administered to the primary care physicians in March 2016. One hundred twenty-six physicians participated in the research. It was observed that 38% of the participants worked as a physician for 10 years or less and that the ratio of those who worked in tuberculosis dispensary was very low (10%). The ratio of those who were trained about tuberculosis after starting to work as a family physician was determined to be 34% and the ratio of those who diagnosed tuberculosis during was determined to be 29%. Physicians working in primary health care institutions continue to see patients with tuberculosis. However, since complex and difficult cases with tuberculosis emerge in increasing numbers, additional training programs might be organized in order to update the knowledge on tuberculosis and preserve the awareness of new developments.
