Effect of Motivation Levels of Midwifery Students on Professional Career Plans

Abstract

Objective: The research, was carried out to determine the effect of motivation levels of midwifery students on their professional career plans. Materials and Methods: The sampling of the descriptive study was composed of 234 students studying in the Midwifery Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences of a state university in Istanbul. The "Introductory Information Form" containing the socio-demographic characteristics of the students and the "Motivation Sources and Problems Scale" was used to collect the data. The data were analyzed on the computer. Results: In the study, it was found that 77.8% of the students chose the midwifery profession voluntarily and 35.9% chose to find an easy job. 32.9% of students planned to pursue a master's degree as a career immediately after graduation, 35.9% of them want to work in the first step of health services, and 20.9% of them thought to work in midwifery status/position in other areas of health services. Between the internal and external motivation of students by willingly choosing midwifery department; A significant relation was found between the effect of education on career plan and the internal motivation (p <0.05). Conclusion: Counseling is recommended for midwifery students to make career plans for their skills.
