Book-Critical Edition

Critical edition is the attempt to reach out the original form of a manuscript based on its different copies. When citing a critical edition of a book in the field of Social Sciences, the abbreviation “Critical ed.” is added before the name of its critical editor. (Example: Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār, Talkhīṣ al-adilla, Critical ed. Angelika Brodersen). In academic writing systems such as APA, MLA and Chicago, the expression “Edited by” or the abbreviation “ed.” is preferred instead of “critical edition”. (Example: Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār, Talkhīṣ al-adilla, ed. Angelika Brodersen). In fact, a critical edition of a work is different than an editorial publication; therefore, we need to differentiate between the two by using a distinguishing abbreviation. For this reason, in the ISNAD Citation Style, it is required to use the abbreviation “Critical ed.” when citing a critical edition of a work in English academic wrintings, and the abbreviation “thk.” (for taḥqīq) in Turkish.

First Reference: Author’s First and Last Name, Title of Book, Critical ed. Critical Editor’s First and Last Name (Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication), Volume/Page Number.

The Qur’ ān

No quotation marks are used when quoting an original Qur’ānic verse. As for its translation, it should be italicized and in double quotes. Chapter (sūra) and verse numbers are indicated in footnote. Observe the definite (al-) articles at the start of chapter names and the long vowels (ā) in them. If the translation of a verse is taken from a published translation of the Qur’ān, its translator, publisher and printing information should be indicated in its first reference in footnote.
Example: اِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذينَ اِذَا ذُكِرَ اللّٰهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَاِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ اٰيَاتُهُ زَادَتْهُمْ ايمَاناً وَعَلٰى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَۚ “The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.”1
