THE MONOCENTRISM OF HISTORY AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF MYTH: RETHINKING EUROCENTRIC HISTORIOGRAPHY

Abstract

One of the fundamental questions of modern world history is how to explain the phenomenon known as the "Rise of the West," which refers to the process of Europe accumulating disproportionate power and wealth compared to the rest of the world, beginning around the 1500s. Responses to this question have often been confined to a Eurocentric framework that focuses on the internal dynamics and unique qualities of the West. According to this approach, "the modern world and all the progress derived from it—capitalism, secularism, a dynamic art system, modern science—are all purely European phenomena."¹ This article aims to systematically organize a seemingly disparate set of academic citations to first reveal the main pillars of this classic Eurocentric narrative and then to problematize this narrative with counterarguments and evidence provided by critical historiography. To achieve this aim, the research adopted an approach based on critical historiography and discourse analysis. Within this framework, the conceptual frameworks dominant in Eurocentric historiography were subjected to critical analysis. Approaches that present Europe's historical development as a universal model were critiqued through comparative historical analysis. Thus, it will be demonstrated that the rise of the West was a much more complex process shaped by global contexts and mutual interactions, rather than a unidirectional "internal miracle."

TARİHİN TEK MERKEZLİLİĞİ VE MİTİN İNŞASI: AVRUPAMERKEZCİ TARİH YAZIMINI YENİDEN DÜŞÜNMEK

Abstract

Modern dünya tarihinin temel sorularından biri, "Batı'nın yükselişi" olarak adlandırılan ve yaklaşık 1500'lerden itibaren Avrupa'nın, dünyanın geri kalanına kıyasla orantısız bir güç ve zenginlik biriktirme sürecini ifade eden olgunun nasıl açıklanacağıdır. Bu soruya verilen yanıtlar, genellikle Batı'nın içsel dinamiklerine ve kendine özgü niteliklerine odaklanan Avrupamerkezci bir çerçeveye hapsolmuştur. Bu yaklaşıma göre, "modern dünya ve ondan kaynaklanan tüm ilerlemeler, kapitalizm, sekülarizm, dinamik bir sanat sistemi, modern bilim, bunların hepsi tamamen Avrupalı fenomenlerdir."¹ Bu makale, dağınık gibi görünen bir dizi akademik alıntıyı sistematik bir düzene sokarak, öncelikle bu klasik Avrupamerkezci anlatının temel sütunlarını ortaya koymayı, ardından eleştirel tarih yazımının sunduğu karşı argümanlar ve kanıtlarla bu anlatıyı sorunsallaştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaca ulaşmak için araştırmada eleştirel tarih yazımı ve söylem çözümlemesi temelli bir yaklaşım benimsenmiştir. Bu çerçevede Avrupamerkezci tarih yazımında hâkim olan kavramsal çerçeveler eleştirel bir okumaya tabi tutulmuştur. Karşılaştırmalı tarih analiz yöntemi ile Avrupa’nın tarihsel gelişimini evrensel bir model olarak sunan yaklaşımlar eleştirilmiştir. Böylece, Batı'nın yükselişinin tek yönlü bir "içsel mucize"den ziyade, küresel bağlamlar ve karşılıklı etkileşimlerle şekillenen çok daha karmaşık bir süreç olduğu gösterilecektir.
