LIMITING FACTORS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PARTICIPATION BANKING IN TURKIYE: A QUALITATIVE FIELD STUDY

Abstract

This study aims to examine the key limiting factors in the development of participation banking in Turkiye and to propose evidence-based solutions derived from qualitative field research. In this context, the current state of participation banking practices and the difficulties faced by the sector were analyzed based on the perspectives of industry professionals. Interviews were conducted with mid- and senior-level executives working at the headquarters, regional directorates, and departmental manager of six participation banks operating in Turkiye. A total of 32 participants were interviewed. During the interviews, ten open-ended questions were asked to gather insights into the obstacles to the development of participation banking, and participants were asked to share their evaluations regarding the sector. The findings reveal several critical issues facing participation banking, including the absence of an Islamic financial rating system, insufficient capital and funding sources, and the ineffective implementation of competitive products and services that differentiate participation banks from conventional ones. Additionally, the need to enhance public awareness in alignment with the mission and principles of participation banking was frequently emphasized by respondents. As a result of the research, several recommendations were developed to support the advancement of the sector. These include establishing an Islamic Rating Model, diversifying alternative funding sources, and strengthening the promotion and implementation of participation banking-specific products to gain a competitive edge. This study contributes to the literature on a theoretical level and provides practical implications for the development of the participation banking sector.
