FOOTBALL AND MEDIA: FEEDBACKS OF THE TARGET GROUP FOR SOURCE

Abstract

Sports media fulfills and important role by passing on the sports events to the masses in Turkey as in the whole world. However, it has been a matter of criticism that sport media, under the effect of the popular culture, appeals to the section of society with lower levels of education. This research aims to provide feedback to the media directors by displaying the ideas of the sports public. In the research that was carried on the Internet with a participant group of 252, the participants were asked to relate their ideas about the sports media briefly. The ideas and views of the participants were analyzed using qualitative research analysis methods and 5 principal themes were found out to be dominant: the hegemony of football, prejudiced broadcasting and publishing, week credibility, provocation of violence and low quality. Most of the participants used negative expressions about the sports media when talking about their views. They criticized the sports media for not paying enough attention to all sports fields, for making fictitious news, for being partial in the news and comments about sports clubs, and for their publication and broadcasting agenda which is thought to be inadequate, partial and sensational in nature. Most of the participants wanted the research results to be conveyed to the media organizations and they expressed their lack of hope about getting the media organizations to change their policies.
