KARL POPPER ANF THOMAS KUHN ON THE CONCEPT OF SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS AND METHOD

Abstract

Many philosophers have claimed that science is impressively distinguished from other domains of human culture like religion, art, philosophy and politics due to its reference to its particular method. The acquisition and systematization of positive knowledge are thought to be the cumulative and progressive human activities. However, some philosophers of science have changed the idea of cumulative view of scientific knowledge. For them, the progress of science is not a continuous accumulation, but rather a revolutionary process whereby old ideas are abandoned and new ones are adopted. Thomas Kuhn was a strong proponent of this method of scientific progress. In this article, first of all, we shall take into consideration Popper’s idea that the problem of induction is insoluble. To him, science proceeds by ‘conjectures and refutations’, not by verification. Secondly, we shall discuss how Kuhn followed Popper In rejecting the empiricist model of scientists that argue that knowledge is gradually accumulated through observation and experiment. Kuhn’s rejection of the Popperian Notion that theories can be falsified by having their consequences checked against experience will also be evaluated. The general aim of this study is to show that the definitions of progress which have been proposed so far are not in agreement with each other, and that they greatly have different implications for our understanding of the nature of science. The scientific progress is only possible with the application of some scientific methods. Yet the scientific method or methods proposed so far have not sufficed to account for the progressive developments within the science.

BİLİMSEL İLERLEME VE METOD KAVRAMI ÜZERİNE KARL POPPER VE THOMAS KUHN

Abstract

Pek çok filozof, bilimin kendine has metoduna başvurması sebebiyle onun politika, felsefe, sanat ve din gibi diğer insani kültür alanlarından şaşırtıcı derecede ayrıldığını iddia etmişlerdir. Pozitif bilginin kazanılması ve sistemleştirilmesi, birikimli ve ilerleyen insani faaliyetler olarak düşünülmüştür. Fakat bazı bilim filozofları, bilimsel birikerek arttığı görüşüne meydan okumuşlardır. Onlar için, bilimsel ilerleme sürekli birikimle değil, ancak eski fikirleri terk ederek tamamen yeni fikirlere adapte olan devrimci nitelikte bir süreçledir. Thomas Kuhn, bu tür bilimsel ilerleme modelinin güçlü savunucularından biridir. Bu makalede her şeyden önce, Popper’ın tümevarım sorununun çözümsüz olduğu iddiasına yer vereceğiz. Ona göre, bilim doğrulamalarla değil, ancak tahmin ve çürütmelerle ilerler. Bilimsel ilerleme bazı bilimsel yöntemlerin uygulanmasıyla mümkündür. Ancak, bu zamana kadar önerilen bilimsel yöntem ya da yöntemler bilimin bünyesindeki progresif gelişmeleri açıklamada yetersiz kalmışlardır
