DRAMA IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING AND SAMPLE PLANS FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES (ENGLISH AND FRENCH)

Abstract

Foreign language teaching/learning requires utilizing different learning/teaching processes, methods and techniques in accordance with the changing age and conditions. The changed teaching models have naturally conditioned the language to be prepared for daily life cognitively and auditorily by experience, not mechanically, or in other words not through the traditional approach in which learners are made to memorize the grammatical rules. In this way, the principle of ‘teaching by doing and living’ has constituted the base of course programs. In this formation, drama also utilizes techniques such as improvisation, role-playing, mime and tools such as marionettes, thus providing an ambience where the learner can form his own feelings, ideas and play. In foreign language teaching/learning, the use of dramatic technique contributes not only to the acquisition of certain sensory skills of the learner such as understanding, discovering, interrogating, criticizing, commenting, studying collectively, arguing, problem-solving, decision-making and enterprise, but also to the acquisition of basic verbal and non-verbal language skills such as understanding, thinking, speaking, listening, expressing and communicating. In this way, it develops the effective and correct usage of a language. In foreign language teaching, the use of drama with plays, mimes and improvisations is a very useful means for the language to be functional not at an academic, but communicative level. Especially for the primary-school children, beginning to learn a foreign language with an entertaining configuration will eliminate the probable prejudices on this subject, so it will be effective in putting what is learned into life and will contribute to the understanding and coding of the language. The present study has been intended to design the programs existing in the primary-school foreign language (French-English) school books by drama. Course program models, designed with consideration paid to the elements in the process of drama, can be developed and changed.
