MYTHS AND INTER-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Abstract

Man of our age, with the communication technology he developed, seems to have succeeded in the impossible and brought the whole world, even the universe, into direct contact. While these dizzying developments in the field of communication carry humankind into a different dimension and location from other entities in history, they indirectly show us the extent to which “imagination”, which is indeed an important faculty inherited from ancestors, could force the limits of mind. This also suggests, though unconsciously many times, that by using his mind he turns his imagination into reality, thus proving that “mind” and “imagination”, which have been excluded by rigidly rationalist and phenomenological circles and considered by them as two opposite irreconcilable concepts, are indeed two inseparable parts of a whole. Power of imagination, neither prehistoric nor modern man could lay aside, still exists in the modern-day human nature as it did in the past, though for different purposes and in different dimensions; in this context, it either updates the old mythical stories or continues to create new myths and mythical stories, depending on the conditions of its era. For this quality is an inseparable part of the universality of man. Through the images and symbols concealed in them, they are used in multi-cultural communication and in many different fields and maintain their importance.
