The Practices of Urban Space from the Viewpoint of Women

Abstract

In the urban texture where the social and the political are shaped in different perspectives, the individual’s struggle for equality, his participation in decisions, his existence in public and private space, his doings in the fields of power and social life appear with different representations of gender. Urban life prepares a ground for the individual to realize his sociality while it reproduces semantic codes concerning gender within this sociality. Therefore, while the city presents different freedoms, opportunities, security and insurance services both to man and woman in different living spaces within its socio-cultural texture, the urban space appears as a gendered space. While the city identifies the living space of woman as the house and the interior, it directs man to the different spaces of social life within daily practices. The fact that this highlights spatial differentiation between man and woman in the fields of education, socialization, employment and politics can be analysed as a social problem. Therefore, in the process of (re)production of the definitions of manhood and womanhood with gender roles, spatial differentiations and relations are crucially important. The quality of the (re)production of gender relations both reflect and affect the changing nature of the social-spatial structure. (Alkan, 2009: 13) Approached from this point, this study, with reference to different theoretical perspectives, aims to find the traces of gender dynamics experienced in the city culture differently and evaluate how the texture of the space can be related with gender, what types of definitions the space impose on man and woman and what shapes these definitions take in time. For this reason, the study attempts to figure out by which cultural codes the masculine city transmits gender dynamics to the individual and how it secures the reproduction of this process.
