Yeşil yıkama (greenwashing) ve Türkiye'de sağlık sektörü üzerine bir değerlendirme

Abstract

Sürdürülebilirlik, sağlıklı bir toplum yapısının inşasında tüm sektörleri ilgilendiren kritik bir hedeftir. Literatürde çalışmaların genellikle üretim odaklı alanlarda yoğunlaştığı görülse de sağlık sektörü, yüksek kaynak kullanımı ve karbon salımı nedeniyle çevresel sürdürülebilirlik açısından stratejik bir öneme sahip olduğu saptanmıştır. Sağlık hizmetlerinin doğası gereği sosyal sürdürülebilirlik boyutunun ön plana çıktığı, bununla birlikte kurumların çevreye duyarlı olduklarına dair paylaştıkları mesajların her zaman somut çevresel performansla örtüşmediği tespit edilmiştir. İşletmelerin çevresel etkilerini olduğundan daha olumlu gösterme çabası olarak tanımlanan “yeşil yıkama” (greenwashing) olgusunun, paydaş güvenini sarsan ciddi bir risk teşkil ettiği değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada Türkiye'de sağlık sektöründeki yeşil yıkama riskleri analiz edilmiştir. Bu kapsamda sağlık kuruluşlarının çevresel iddiaları ile gerçek uygulamaları arasındaki tutarlılık incelenmiş; yasal uyumun sürdürülebilirlik başarısı olarak sunulması, dijitalleşme söyleminin seçici biçimde öne çıkarılması, sertifikasyon belgelerinin gerçek operasyonel performansı yansıtmadan tanıtım aracı olarak kullanılması ve ölçülebilir veri paylaşımından kaçınılması gibi temel yeşil yıkama örüntüleri belirlenmiştir. Çalışma, sağlık kurumlarının çevresel sorumluluklarını daha objektif bir zeminde ele almanın ve sektörde gerçek anlamda çevre dostu politikaların geliştirilmesinin önemine dikkat çekmiştir.

Greenwashing and an evaluation of the healthcare sector in Türkiye

Abstract

Sustainability is a critical objective for all sectors in building a healthy social structure. Although academic literature tends to focus on production-based industries, the healthcare sector has been identified as strategically significant for environmental sustainability due to its high resource consumption and carbon emissions. It has been found that while the social dimension of sustainability is inherently prominent in healthcare services, the environmental claims made by institutions do not always align with their actual performance. The phenomenon of “greenwashing” — defined as the effort by organizations to portray their environmental impacts more favorably than they are — has been assessed as a serious risk that undermines stakeholder trust. In this study, greenwashing risks in the Turkish healthcare sector were analyzed. In this context, the consistency between the environmental claims of healthcare institutions and their actual practices was examined; key greenwashing patterns were identified, including the presentation of regulatory compliance as sustainability achievement, the selective emphasis on digitalization discourse, the use of certification documents as promotional tools without reflecting genuine operational performance, and the avoidance of sharing measurable data. The study has drawn attention to the importance of addressing the environmental responsibilities of healthcare institutions on a more objective basis and of developing genuinely eco-friendly policies within the sector.
