A Comparative Study On Translations Of Moliere's The Miser
Abstract
In this study, three different translations of Moliere’s The Miser will be examined. The Miser has been translated into many languages so far when its adaptations are taken into account as well. The Miser was first rendered into Turkish by Ahmet Vefik Pasha in 1873 as Azarya, then in 1873, Teodor Kasab rendered it as Pinti Hamid; both were in fact adaptions. The complete translation made by İsmail Hamid Danişment was first published by Suhulet Bookstore in 1938 and then it was published by The Ministry of Education of Turkey. Later, many publishers and translators mainly Yaşar Nabi Nayır and Sabahattin Eyüboğlu were interested Moliere’s The Miser. Within the scope of this article, short and descriptive information about the author and his work will be provided. Afterwards, translation decisions will be discussed in all three translations by means of the examples. The purpose of this study is not to list the problems we face as translation errors. Rather, the aim of this study is to indicate decisions of the translators by comparing translations in cases where we can consider them as problems. Therefore, translation products will be discussed within the context of cause-effect relations. The reason of selecting this corpus which includes three translations made in different periods is the effort to observe translation decisions regarding the problems in those periods. Therefore, we will be able to have an idea about the translation decisions that vary in different periods.
