Abstract

Abstract

This article tests the neediness of the including a lesson called lexicography or dictionary usage in the schedule of adult turkophone foreign language learners studying at University Fırat. There are two main purposes of doing such research: First, lexicography is not seen today as just a discipline of the art and craft of dictionary making, because it has a teachable theory, and established itself among the contemporary scientific disciplines. And the next is the wish to pass on the necessary basic knowledge of this young discipline, including its scientific status, for next generations. The aim of this research is to contribute the review of current scientific theories related to this discipline, introduce its applied aspects to adult foreign language learners and to reassess this research questions. For this purpose, adult turkophone students from the University Fırat, Department of German Language and Literature, were asked for their opinion in a survey whether a lesson with the title Dictionary Use should be added in their timetable. The answers of 51 students, who took part in a five-point likert scale survey, were examined. According to this survey, the opinion of the participants is as follows: 1) very necessary (27.5%); 2) necessary (43.1%); 3) little necessary (13.7%); 4) unnecessary (7.8%); 5) 7.8% did not express any opinion. This result shows us that 84.3% (27.5% + 43.1% + 13.7% = 84.3%) of turkophone foreign language learners are very willing, willing or inclined to add such a lesson to their schedule. In addition, a significant percentage of respondents use dictionary to translate (96.1%) to look up the meaning of an unknown word (86.3%) and to prepare for next lesson (70%). However, the same participants do not show interest in the theoretical aspect of the dictionary like the use of the dictionary. They do not show the same interest (only 39.3%) like dictionary usage in the theoretical aspect of lexicography.
