Contribution of science and technology festivals to students: A research on the example of Kartal Science and Technology Festival

Abstract

In terms of the development of societies, it is important for scientists to integrate with
the public and interact with them. TÜBİTAK develops Science and Society Support Programs
in this context. The general purpose of science fairs organized in this context is to disseminate
science and scientific ideas, to encourage invention and to popularize them. The sample of the
study was primary and secondary school students who participated in the festival. In this research
the Science Festival Attitude Scale (BŞTÖ) developed by Keçeci, Kırbağ Zengin, and Alan (2017)
was used as a data collection tool. The scale, which aims to determine the attitudes of primary and
secondary school students towards science festivals, is in 5-point Likert type. The research revealed
that there was a positive significant change in the effect of “contribution of science festivals to
personal development”, “effect of science festivals on social life” and “belief that science festivals are
interesting” on primary and secondary school students who participated in the festival. As a result
of this evaluation, it can be said that the 4007 Kartal Science and Technology Festival, supported
by TÜBİTAK, was beneficial for the participants and the targeted goal was achieved.

Bilim ve teknoloji şenliklerinin öğrenciye katkısı: Kartal Bilim ve Teknoloji Şenliği örneği üzerine bir araştırma

Abstract

Toplumların gelişimi açısından bilim insanlarının halkla bütünleşebilmesi, onlarla etkileşimde olması önemlidir. TÜBİTAK bu kapsamda Bilim ve Toplum Destek programları
geliştirmektedir. Bilim fuarlarının genel amacı, bilimi ve bilimsel düşünmeyi yaygınlaştırmak, buluş yapmayı teşvik etmek ve bunları popülerleştirmektir. Çalışmanın örneklemini, şenlik
katılımcısı olan ilkokul ve ortaokul öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak, Keçeci, Kırbağ Zengin ve Alan (2017) tarafından geliştirilen Bilim Şenliği Tutum Ölçeği
(BŞTÖ) kullanılmıştır. İlkokul ve ortaokul öğrencilerinin bilim şenliklerine yönelik tutumlarını tespit etmeyi amaçlayan ölçek, 5’li Likert tipindedir. Araştırma, şenliğe katılan ilkokul ve ortaokul
öğrencilerinin üzerinde “bilim şenliklerinin kişisel gelişime katkısı”, “bilim şenliklerinin sosyal yaşama etkisi”, “bilim şenliklerinin ilgi çekici olduğuna inanç” etkisinde pozitif yönde anlamlı
bir değişiklik olduğunu ortaya çıkarmıştır. TÜBİTAK tarafından desteklenen 4007 Kartal Bilim ve Teknoloji Şenliği’nin bu değerlendirme sonucunda, katılımcılar açısından faydalı olduğu ve
hedeflenen amaca ulaştığı söylenebilir.
