COMPUTER USE OF NURSES

Abstract

Introduction: The roles and responsibilities of nurses in health care institutions are changing with the effect of technology and the quality of service to the individual is becoming higher. Although computers entering to the nurses’ daily and professional lives rapidly, it is stated in the literature that the nurses show resistance to computer use in health care. Objective: Research was conducted between March and April 2015 in Kastamonu Dr. Münif İslamoğlu State Hospital, Kastamonu Dr. Münif İslamoğlu Additional Service Building, and Kastamonu Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Center. The research universe and 410 nurses working in these hospitals are 120 nurses. The data were collected by a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics (number and percentage) were used in the evaluation of the data. Ethical issues: Written permissions were obtained from the Provincial Directorate of Public Hospitals and the hospital administration where the research was conducted so that the research could be carried out. Verbal informed consent was obtained prior to the survey. Results: The nurses who participated in our research were 31-40 years old(56.7%) and married(82.5%) women(83.3%). 49.2% of them were working in clinics(90.0%), were working for 11-15 years(25.0%) had baccalaurate graduates. 96.7% have a computer, 49.2% use a medium level computer. 92.5% felt comfortable using a computer. 39.2% used computers 1-3 hours a day, 40.8% used computers more than 10 years. Nurses positive statements about “computer use in nursing” are often "agree"(27.0% - 58.3%). In negative statements, "I do not agree with the rate of 49.2% for "computer use neglects patient privacy" and 44.2% for" the use of computers in the health care system will increase the workload of the nurses ". Conclusion: The computer usage rate of nurses is very high. The experience of using a computer is higher than other samples. Nurses' computer usage rates were found high. In addition, nurses often give "I agree" responses to positive statements about computer use, while responses to negative statements about computer use vary.Recommendations: Nurses may be advised to provide training in reducing their participation in negative statements about computer use.and awareness-raising.
