The Effect of Multisensory-Based Materials on the Reading Skills of Children with Learning Disabilities

Abstract

Reading material that appeals to multiple senses can provide readers with an interactive, active reading and learning environment. This study investigates the effectiveness of reading activities with multisensory materials on the fluent reading skills of students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities. For this purpose, the students were asked to use the material by first listening, then reading, then acting out the story with puppets, and finally rereading it with the book “My Book, My Friend”, a material developed using a multisensory method. The study was designed using a qualitative approach and conducted through action research. Five students and three teachers included in the study were given a material book developed based on multisensory concepts to practice in the support education room in general education schools and were asked to use it. Then, the LAB (Literacy Assessment Battery) was applied to determine the effectiveness of the material. As a result of the research, it was observed that using multisensory materials improved students’ reading, reading comprehension and writing.
