Regulations Made by The Prophet (Pbuh) Regarding the Commercial Perceptions and Practices of The Islamic Society
Abstract
It is inevitable that religions will make important regulations on issues related to trade, which is an indispensable area of societies in every period of human history. The Arab society in which the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was born and lived was a society in which both local and regional trade was actively carried out, and therefore it had important rules regulating commercial activities and established self-control mechanisms within itself for the security of trade. As in every society, measures were tried to be taken in areas where the strong could oppress the weak, but due to the lack of a strong legal concept at the time, the measures taken did not have the desired effect. However, during the dark period that the Arabs were in, a group of people, including the Prophet (pbuh), initiated a formation known as the Hilf al-Fudul or the Society of the Virtuous in order to stand against injustice. This did not provide a general improvement, but it also showed that there were people in society who reacted against injustice. After the Prophet (pbuh) migrated to Medina, important developments also took place in the field of trade. The first of these regulations was the establishment of a marketplace, which also aimed to break the monopoly of the Jews who controlled trade in Medina. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), who established a marketplace for Muslims, brought a new breath to trade by making important arrangements here. More importantly, he aimed to ensure that Muslims took an active role in trade. He also aimed to prevent unfair gains within society by conducting fair trade. He tried to ensure that Muslims created a strong sense of trust towards each other and thus created a society of trust. The main goals of our study are to show that the commercial life that the Prophet Muhammad tried to establish was a system that aimed to provide easy access to products for all segments of society and also to keep purchasing power in balance. In addition, by making evaluations on the nature of money, we clarify the reasons for one of the most important reasons for the greatest economic difficulties of today’s societies. In addition, we highlight the negativities created by practices such as interest and black markets within society. We explain that the main goal of Islam in the field of trade is to create a more just and livable society.
