MARITIME PILOTS IN STRAITS OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE
Öz
A captain is the navigator of a ship; however, he may not have sufficient information on the current position during navigation. Since the maps used when a ship enters problematic harbors and channels may not provide sufficient navigation, captains receive assistance from maritime pilots. Although new routes were found with geographical discoveries, Istanbul and Dardanelles Straits, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and similar maritime lines kept their importance. Major accidents were possible in Europe due to the carelessness of the captains of the ships passing through the straits. It was made compulsory to receive assistance from maritime pilots to solve these problems. The Ottoman Empire also started to apply maritime pilot application in 1856 to prevent problems with the ships passing through the straits. In this study, the duties and the importance of the maritime pilots in the straits, and the companies that were established for the purpose of providing maritime pilots have been examined.
