Abstract

The Effects of Ear-Plugs and Eye Band Usage on Sleep Problems and Sleep Quality in Intensive Care Patients

Year 2025, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 9 - 20, 21.04.2025

Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of earplugs and eye masks on sleep disturbance and sleep quality in intensive care patients.
Method: This experimental study was conducted between June 2017 and December 2018 with 29 patients treated in the internal medicine intensive care unit, pulmonary intensive care unit and cardiology intensive care unit of a university hospital. Participants were divided into three groups: earplug, eye mask and control groups. Data were collected using the Participant Information Form, the Intensive Care Unit Sleep Quality Questionnaire, and the Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire.
Results: It was found that the majority of participants were female, married, primary school graduates, housewives and on social security. There was a statistically significant difference between the mean Richards Campbell Sleep Scale scores of the patients in the control group, eye mask group and earplug group (F = 9.379, p = 0.001). The mean Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire scores of patients in the eye mask group were statistically significantly higher compared to the earplug and control groups (p < 0.001). In addition, the mean scores of the earplug group were also significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the use of eye masks and earplugs in the intensive care unit is effective in improving sleep quality. It is recommended that appropriate tools and methods be used to address sleep problems in intensive care unit patients, that care plans be adjusted according to sleep problems, and that health care team members be educated about this issue.
