Reminding a Ghost in the Shadow of Nothingness and Death: The Missing House/ La Maison Manquante

Abstract

This research presents an analysis of French artist Christian Boltanski's 1992 work The Missing House (La Maison Manquante) in the context of the relationship between existence and disappearance in the perspective of death/ nothingness, space/ void relations. Questioning the interaction between material absence and meaning in the installation through the phenomena of death and nothingness, the research aims to illuminate Boltanski's artistic practice based on loss/remembrance on the plane of spatial existence by focusing on the lasting impact of historical trauma on individual and collective consciousness. Characterized by his quest for storytelling, the artist's works, which are usually created with unclaimed objects, clothes and photographs, are based on themes such as death, extinction, oblivion, memory, identity, remembering and commemoration, and becoming aware of the pain of the other. In this sense, in order to help understand Boltanski's artistic language, Personnes and Les Archives du Cœurs, which are also considered as examples of memento mori, and the Site Specific work The Missing House, which is the subject of the research, are evaluated in the light of the existential relationship of the phenomenon of space with the concepts of emptiness, death and nothingness.

Hiçlik ve Ölümün Gölgesinde Bir Hayaleti Hatırlatmak: Kayıp Ev/ La Maison Manquante

Abstract

Bu araştırma, Fransız Sanatçı Christian Boltanski’nin 1992 yılında ortaya koyduğu Kayıp Ev (La Maison Manquante/ The Missing House) eserine dair; ölüm/ hiçlik, mekân/ boşluk ilişkileri perspektifinde var oluş/ yok oluş ilişkisi bağlamında bir inceleme sunmaktadır. Enstalasyondaki maddi yokluk ve anlam arasındaki etkileşimi ölüm ve hiçlik olguları üzerinden sorgulayan araştırma, tarihsel travmanın bireysel ve kolektif bilinç üzerindeki kalıcı etkisine odaklanarak Boltanski'nin mekânsal varoluş düzleminde kayıp/ hatırlama üzerine kurulu sanatsal pratiğine ışık tutmayı amaçlamaktadır. Hikâye anlatıcılığı arayışıyla karakterize edilen sanatçının, genellikle sahipsiz nesneler, kıyafetler ve fotoğraflarla oluşturduğu eserleri; ölüm, yok oluş, unutulma, hafıza, kimlik, hatırlama ve anma üzerine ötekinin acısının farkına varma gibi temalar üzerine kuruludur. Bu anlamda araştırmada Boltanski’nin sanat dilini anlamaya yardımcı olmak amacıyla, memento mori örnekleri olarak da ele alınan, Personnes ve Les Archives du Cœurs eserleri ve araştırmaya konu olan Site Specific eseri Kayıp Ev; mekân olgusunun boşluk, ölüm ve hiçlik kavramlarıyla olan varoluşsal ilişkisi ışığında değerlendirilmiştir.
