Levels of Carbon Dioxide in Greenhouses and Possible Effects of Carbon Dioxide Fertilization

Abstract

Effect of different types of carbondioxide application in greenhouses on changes in plant yield is investigated. Plants require oxygen for respiration and CO2 for assimilation. It is not enough to explain plant growth on the bases of soil-plant-water relation. Exchange of gases in the atmosphere must be taken into consideration. Especially CO2 gas that is constituent of photosynthesis is very effective in the plant development. Because of the effects on plant development and yield, CO2 fertilization plays an important role in greenhouse cultivation. It is possible to increase plant yield with appropriate levels of CO2 fertilization in greenhouse. In this study, yield increase in plants as a result of increase in CO2 concentration and contribution of CO2 on plant yield are presented.
