The View of the Transparency Degree of Idioms in the Textbooks of Teaching Turkish to Foreigners: A Review of Yedi İklim A1-A2 Textbooks

Abstract

This study examines the distribution of idioms in terms of transparency in Yedi İklim A1-A2 textbooks. Idioms are classified as transparent, semi-transparent, or opaque based on the proximity between their literal and figurative meanings. Transparency is associated with the ease of comprehension and acquisition, with contextual clues playing a crucial role. Using the document analysis method, the meanings of idioms were identified based on the definitions provided in the Türk Dil Kurumu dictionaries. Three experts analyzed and classified the idioms according to their transparency. At A1-level, 58 idioms were analyzed, of which 63.79% were transparent, 27.59% were semi-transparent, and 8.62% were opaque. At A2-level, 119 idioms were analyzed, 78.15% of which were transparent, 15.13% were semi-transparent, and 6.72% were opaque. The findings indicate that prioritizing transparent and semi-transparent idioms at the basic level is appropriate, while introducing opaque idioms at more advanced levels may enhance comprehension. These results may provide valuable insights for researchers and textbook authors.

Yabancılara Türkçe Öğretimi Ders Kitaplarındaki Deyimlerin Saydamlık Derecesi Bakımından Görünümü: Yedi İklim A1-A2 Ders Kitapları Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Deyimler gerçek ve değişmeceli anlamları arasındaki yakınlık açısından saydam, yarı saydam ve opak olarak tanımlanır. Deyimlerin saydamlığı ne kadar kolay anlaşılıp öğrenilebildiğiyle ilgilidir. Deyimlerin öğreniminde bağlamsal ipucu da önemli destek sağlar. Bu araştırmanın amacı Yedi İklim A1-A2 ders kitaplarındaki deyimlerin saydamlık bakımından nasıl bir dağılım gösterdiğini belirlemektir. Belge çözümlemesi yönteminin kullanıldığı araştırmada ders kitaplarında yer verilen deyimlerin gerçek ve deyimsel anlamı Türk Dil Kurumu sözlüklerinden belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen deyimlerin saydamlık derecesi deyimsel ve gerçek anlamlarından yönelimle üç uzman tarafından çözümlenmiştir. A1 düzeyi ders kitabında incelenen 58 deyimin %63,79’u saydam, %27,59’u yarı saydam ve %8,62’si opaktır. A2 düzeyi ders kitabında incelenen 119 deyimin %78,15’inin saydam, %15,13’ünün yarı saydam ve %6,72’sinin opak olduğu saptanmıştır. Araştırmanın bulguları, temel düzeyde ağırlıklı olarak saydam ve yarı saydam deyimlere yer verilmesinin uygun olduğunu göstermiştir. Opak deyimlerin daha ileri düzeylerde öğretilmesinin öğrencilerin anlamlandırma sürecine katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. Elde edilen bulgular araştırmacılara ve ders kitabı yazarlarına önemli katkılar sunabilir.
