The View of the Transparency Degree of Idioms in the Textbooks of Teaching Turkish to Foreigners: A Review of Yedi İklim A1-A2 Textbooks

Öz

This study examines the distribution of idioms in terms of transparency in Yedi İklim A1-A2 textbooks. Idioms are classified as transparent, semi-transparent, or opaque based on the proximity between their literal and figurative meanings. Transparency is associated with the ease of comprehension and acquisition, with contextual clues playing a crucial role. Using the document analysis method, the meanings of idioms were identified based on the definitions provided in the Türk Dil Kurumu dictionaries. Three experts analyzed and classified the idioms according to their transparency. At A1-level, 58 idioms were analyzed, of which 63.79% were transparent, 27.59% were semi-transparent, and 8.62% were opaque. At A2-level, 119 idioms were analyzed, 78.15% of which were transparent, 15.13% were semi-transparent, and 6.72% were opaque. The findings indicate that prioritizing transparent and semi-transparent idioms at the basic level is appropriate, while introducing opaque idioms at more advanced levels may enhance comprehension. These results may provide valuable insights for researchers and textbook authors.
