Dietary Antioxidant Supplements and Exercise

Abstract

Nutritional supplements are commonly used among by athletes. Many athletes think that antioxidant supplements decrease muscle damage, immunodeficiency and fatigue and thus cause performance gain.
When the literature is examined, it appears that the majority of investigations focus that effects of antioxidant supplements on markers and muscle damage induced oxidative stress rather than exercise performance. In addition, in some studies it is stated that antioxidant supplements are a positive effect on muscle fatigue after unaccustomed exercise. However, the relationship between antioxidant supplements and exercise is not clear, despite increased researches. This review will attempt to explain the relationship between dietary antioxidant supplements and exercise in the light of various investigations.
