INDIVIDUAL AND WOMAN BETWEEN MIDDLE AGES AND RENAISSANCE IN LA CELESTINA: TRAGICOMEDY OF CALISTO Y MELIBEA

Abstract

La Celestina: Calisto and Melibea's Tragicomedy, one of the most important works of the Spanish Literature as it deals with the conflict between the medieval society and the individual, gains importance also in the face of the Renaissance. We witness the supremacy of the norms of the society over the individual, while the writer Fernando de Rojas skillfully and delicately created the characters, focusing on the individual perception of the period. At the same time, in the work that emphasizes the point of view towards the women, universal subjects are presented to the reader by being processed with the human nature and the instincts. In the work, young Calisto -who has become a slave of his passions-, Melibea –pure, naive, faithful to the traditions-, the love lived exaggeratedly between them and the elder magician Celestina –in whom we witness extreme desires and emotions- are criticized. The work with the characters being punished as a result of their inappropriate actions that cannot be accepted by the society is thus a didactic text. In the mentioned work, the individual and the woman between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as the subject of the text will be discussed and examined.

CELESTINA: CALISTO VE MELİBEA’NIN TRAJIKOMEDYASI’NDA ORTAÇAĞ VE RÖNESANS ARASINDA KALMIŞ BİREY VE KADIN

Abstract

İspanyol Edebiyatının Ortaçağ toplumu ve bireyi arasındaki çatışmayı ele almasıyla en önemli eserlerinden biri olan Celestina: Calisto ve Melibea’nın Trajikomedyası, Rönesans’a dönmüş yüzüyle de önem kazanmaktadır. Yazar Fernando de Rojas’ın ustalıkla ve incelikle yarattığı karakterler vasıtasıyla, dönemin birey algısına odaklanırken, toplumun normlarının bireyler üzerindeki üstünlüğüne tanık oluruz. Aynı zamanda kadına karşı olan bakış açısının da vurgulandığı eserde, evrensel konular gün yüzüne çıkarken, insan, doğasıyla ve içgüdüleriyle işlenerek okuyucuya sunulur. Eserde genç, tutkularının kölesi olmuş Calisto ve saf, geleneklerine bağlı Melibea’nın aşkıyla ve de yaşlı büyücü Celestina’nın tamahkârlığıyla insani duyguların aşırıya kaçması eleştirilir. Topluma uygun olmayan eylemler sonucunda cezalandırılan karakterleriyle eser, didaktik bir metin olma özelliği taşımaktadır. Çalışmanın konusu olarak sözü geçen eserdeki birey ve kadın, Ortaçağ ve Rönesans arasında kalmış olarak ele alınacak ve incelenecektir.
