Abstract

Kentlerin mekânsal organizasyonunun şekillenmesinde hâkim beden algısının etkili olduğunu belirten Richard Sennett, Ten ve Taş adlı kitabında kültür, inanç ve iktidarın beden üzerinden kent mekanına yansımalarını incelemektedir. Kitapta Atina, Roma, Paris, Venedik, Londra ve New York gibi Batı uygarlığının önemli kentlerinin belli dönemleri kesitler halinde ele alınarak o dönemdeki beden kavrayışının kentsel mekân tasarımını şekillendirmesi akıcı bir üslupla dile getirilmektedir. Kent mekanına bakışımızı ve kenti algılayışımızı etkileyecek olan bu kitap toplumsalın mekandaki izdüşümlerini anlamamızda yeni bir perspektif kazandıracak bir niteliğe sahiptir.

The Body and the City in Western Civilization

Abstract

Richard Sennett, who states that the dominant perception of the human body is effective in shaping the spatial organization of cities, examines the reflections of culture, belief, and, power on the urban space through the human body in his book Flesh and Stone. In the book, certain historical periods of the important cities of Western civilization such as Athens, Rome, Paris, Venice, London and New York were discussed in sections and how urban space design was shaped by the perception of the human body at the time was explained with a flowing style. The book has the potential to provide a new perspective to our understanding of social projections in spaces while also influencing one's outlook on urban spaces and perception of the city.
