Some Physical and Chemical Properties of Peat Used as Fuel

Abstract

In this research, some physical and chemical properties of North Ireland peat used was fuel were determined. In the research, milled Bord na Mona sphagnum peat was taken from Glenamoy Serics and Bord na Mona unmilled hypnum peat was taken from Gweesala Series were used. Some physical and chemical analyses in peat samples were done and soine important physical and chemical properties for growing media such as total porosity, water holding capacity, aeration, easily available water, water buffering capacity, pH, EC, organic inatter and organic carbon contents were determined. Total porosity had found high in the all samples. While aeration were found enough, easily available water and water buffering capacity are not enough in the all the peat samples. Both series peat can be used as organic matter sources due to high organic matter contents. C/N ratios of peat samples are wide.
