Effects of Different Shading Periods and Row Widths on Pod Yield and Morphine Rate of Some Poppy Varieties

Abstract

his research was conducted to determine the effects of different shading periods and row widths on yield and morphine rate of three poppy varieties (Ofis 95 and Afyon 95 and Afyon 96) during 1995-96 and 1996-97 growing seasons in Doganhisar/Konya. The experiment was designed according to the “Split-Split Plots on a Randomized Complete Block” with three replications and four shading treatments (full shading, shading from flowering to harvest, shading from flowering to harvest, shading from flowering to harvest until capsule development, and open area as control) and four row widths (5, 10, 15 and 20 cm) were taken as factors. According to the mean values of two years, pod yield (1135 kg/ha) and morphine yield (7.14 kg/ha) were obtained from Ofis 95 variety at maximum in shading treatments and 15 cm row widths. Generally, shading applications increased pod yield but decreased morphine rates. All shading application decreased pod diameter, but increased row width made larger of them. The larger pod diameter occurred from 20 cm row width with 5 cm row width.
