Yelten Asklepiosu

Year 2016, Issue: 6, 34 - 59, 01.01.2016

Abstract

Asclepius of Yelten, which was found in the district of Barajaltı in Yelten Town, Korkuteli County, Antalya in 2009 and which we consider to be named with this name, forms the strongest example of the Asclepius Amelung Type which reaches the present day in terms of typology. This Asclepius group statue, which is made of Afyon marble and shines out with its competent masterful craftsmanship, is one of the most beautiful examples found in Anatolia up to day. Asclepius with himation who clings to its sceptre with snakes and holds egg in his hand is depicted on a base with a smaller Telesphoros on his left on a second base. As statue group’s back and the exterior surface of its base are not completely engraved, it must have been made to be displayed in a recess which has a nest for its base. Unfortunately Yelten, the founding place, has not been broadly investigated and two more statues were found there apart from this statue group. Considered its stylistics, the piece must be dated to the second half of the 2nd century A.D.

Yelten Asklepiosu

Year 2016, Issue: 6, 34 - 59, 01.01.2016
