A New Discovery from Olba Excavations: Roman Mosaic

Abstract

The mosaic pavement unearthed during the excavations of 2015 at Mersin Silifke Olba provided archaeological evidence not only for the settlement history of the site, but also the Roman lifestyle and works of art. The pavement is also important for mosaic studies as a newly discovered example from Eastern Rough Cilicia. The pavement is located at the AD 5th century monastery of Olba and revealed that there was an earlier Roman Imperial building at the same site. On one of the panels of the pavement three busts with the personifications of Tryphe luxury , Bios life and Pro To Lousia first bath were represented. The second panel bears three separate squre figural frames set in a geometric composition of guilloche bands forming swastikas. On one of the frames eros with his lyre, on the other eros playing his double aulos and on the third eros holding his spear and running with his dog were depicted. The nearest parallels of the mosaic pavement in respect to its themes, stylistic and technical characteristics come from Antiochia ad Orontem and can be dated to the Severans.

Olba 2015 Kazılarından Yeni Bir Buluntu: Roma Mozaiği

Abstract

Mersin Silifke Olba kazılarının 2015 dönemi manastır çalışmaları sırasında ortaya çıkartılan mozaik taban Olba’nın yerleşim tarihi, kentteki Roma yaşam tarzının niteliği ve sanat yapıtları konusunda önemli bir arkeolojik veri niteliği taşımaktadır. Ayrıca, adı geçen eser, mozaik çalışmaları için de Doğu Dağlık Cilicia Bölgesi’nden yeni bir örnek olarak önem taşımaktadır. Mozaik taban, MS 5. yüzyıla ait Olba Manastırı’nın bulunduğu yerde, daha erken bir Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi yapısının varlığına işaret etmektedir. Mozaiğe ait ilk panoda Tryphe Lüks , Bios Yaşam ve Pro To Lousia İlk Banyo personifikasyonları birer büst biçiminde yer almaktadır. Diğer panoda ise giyoş kuşakları ile oluşturulan gamalı haçların oluşturduğu düzenlemedeki kare çerçeveler içinde eros betimlemeleri bulunmaktadır. Eroslardan biri liri ile kayalıklarda oturmakta, diğeri çifte aulos çalmakta, üçüncüsü de elinde mızrağı ve yanında köpeğiyle kayalıklarda koşmaktadır. İşlenen temalar, stilistik özellikler ve teknik bakımından en yakın benzerleri Antiochia ad Orontem’de bulunan Olba mozaiğini Severuslar Dönemi’ne tarihlemek olasıdır.
