A Neo-Babylonian Stamp Seal from the Excavations of the Acropolis of Olba

Abstract

The subject of this paper is the semi-transparent, light brown coloured chalcedony stamp seal found during the excavations at the acropolis of Olba. The pyramidal seal has an octagonal base with a worship scene which is considered a typical composition in Neo-Babylonian glyptics. The figure in a long dress worshipper stands facing to a platform or an altar. On the platform are placed the symbol of the God Marduk, the spade marru and the lamp, symbol of Nuşku. On top of the scene is depicted the crescent which is the symbol of god Sin. This significant find is not only important for the studies on glyptics but also for providing data for the early settlement history of Olba as well as Eastern Rough Cilicia which is much unknown before the Hellenistic Period. It can be suggested that the presence of such a sophisticated object at the acropolis of Olba must have some connection with the campaign of the Neo-Babylonian king Neriglissar in the region during the mid 6th century BC.

Olba Akropolisi Kazılarından Yeni Babil Damga Mührü

Abstract

Olba kazılarının 2017 dönemi çalışmaları sırasında akropoliste açılan bir sondajda bulunan yarı-saydam, açık kahverengi kalsedon damga mühür bu çalışmanın konusudur. Piramidal biçimli ve sekizgen baskı yüzlü mühürde Yeni Babil gliptik sanatında tipik sayılan bir ibadet sahnesi yer almaktadır. Ayakta duran uzun giysili figür önündeki platformdaki tanrısal simgeler önünde ayakta duran konumda tasvir edilmektedir. Platformun üzerinde Tanrı Marduk’un simgesi bel marru , Nuşku’nun simgesi lamba görülmektedir. Sahnenin üst kısmına ise tanrı Sin’i sembolize eden hilal işlenmiştir. Söz konusu mühür, Olba’nın ve içinde bulunduğu bölgenin Hellenistik Dönem öncesi erken yerleşim tarihini aydınlatan bir buluntu olarak önem taşımakta; özellikle Yeni Babil Kralı Neriglissar’ın MÖ 6. yüzyıl ortalarında bölgeye düzenlediği seferle ilişkili görünmektedir.
