From a social, behavioral and health perspective, Senex investigates the aging process and old age period on a platform that encourages interaction among scientists, researchers and experts; it is an interdisciplinary periodical that aims to present empircal research, conceptual studies and methodological contributions of interest to the scientific community.

Senex seeks to advance dialogue among scientists, researchers and users of research findings coming from a variety of disciplines; in producing, updating and expanding relevant findings and current knowledge; and in contributing to original scientific studies, policy studies, best practices and utility models.

Senex is published online and espouses open access over the course of the year. Articles approved by double-blind peer review are published online. Articles published over the course of the calendar year are compiled at the end of December to form that year’s issue.

PUBLICATION GUIDELINES

Senex: Journal of Aging Studies invites submissions in the following areas;

*The word limits listed below include abstract, text, and references. Tables and figures must not exceed an additional 5 pages.

  1. Research Articles

Research articles present the results of original qualitative or quantitative research. These manuscripts may be no longer than 6,000 words. The word count includes; abstract, text and references. Tables and figures must not exceed an additional 5 pages. The text is usually divided into sections with the headings: Background, Aims, Method, Implications, and Results. Subheads may also be needed to clarify content.

  1. Notes From The Field

Notes From the Field is important and innovative texts that are not as long as research articles, but are equivalent in quality. These manuscripts may be no longer than 3,000 words. The word count includes; abstract, text and references.

  1. Theoretical Interventions

Writings under the heading of the theoretical interventions should consist of debates that present an argument in around current issues in the field of aging studies. These manuscripts may be no longer than 6,000 words. The word count includes; abstract, text and references.

FORMATTING

Manuscripts are to be submitted in Microsoft Word or a Word compatible program. Manuscripts submitted in other formats will be returned to the corresponding author for correction prior to editor review. Please DO NOT submit PDF versions of your manuscript submission materials.

Senex: Journal of Aging Studies has a double-blind review policy. Therefore, we require authors to submit TWO versions of the article file, anonymous and non-anonymous. Please send ONLY these two files, the anonymous and non-anonymous manuscript files. Manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with APA 6th Ed. rules.

Instructions for Anonymous Files

Please send an anonymous version of your manuscript with no author names or contact information on the title page, blinded acknowledgment details, and removed other self-identifying author information. Be sure to check there are no self-references in the text itself that would reveal the identity of the authors. Please remove those instances and insert the term “blinded for review” in its place. This includes self-references to your name and University/Institute. Peer-reviewers may see this version.

Instructions for Non-Anonymous Files

Please send a complete version of the manuscript with all of the author and acknowledgment details. The editors will see this version.

Abbreviations

Ensure that the use of abbreviations is clear and that each one is defined in the text at its first mention only.

In-text References and Citations

Refer to the APA 6th ed. for style. References in text are shown by citing in parentheses the author’s surname and the year of publication. If a reference has two authors, the citation includes the surnames of both authors each time the citation appears in the text. When a reference has more than two authors and fewer than six authors, cite all authors the first time the reference occurs. In subsequent citations, and for all citations having six or more authors, include only the surname of the first author followed by ‘‘et al.’’ Multiple references cited at the same point in the text are in alphabetical order by author’s surname.

COMPONENTS OF THE MANUSCRIPT

Title Page

A title page should be a completely separate page that includes the following:

  • Title of the manuscript (APA recommends that a title be no more than 12 words).
  • All authors’ full name(s), affiliations, and email addresses.
  • The corresponding author should be clearly designated.

Abstract and Keywords

On a separate page, each manuscript must include a brief abstract. Structured abstracts for Research Articles should be between 150-250 words, and must include the following headings: Background, Aims, Method, Implications and Results. There may not be structured titles for Notes From The Field, and Theoretical Intervention manuscripts but the word limit applies to abstract of these manuscripts. Below the abstract, authors should supply three to six keywords that are NOT in the title.

Text

The text of Research Articles should follow the headings included in the structured abstract. Notes From The Field, And Theoretical Interventions should also be divided into headings, as appropriate for the submission. Articles may need subheadings within some sections to clarify their content. The Implications should not merely restate the results but should interpret the results and specify the policy and/or practice implications.

Reference List

Arrange alphabetically by author’s surname cited in the main text; do not number. The reference list includes only references cited in the text. Please see APA 6th. Ed. for details.

Tables

Tables are to be numbered consecutively in the text and a short title must be found for each one on the table. Place table footnotes immediately below the table, using superscript letters (a, b, c) as reference marks. Asterisks are used only for probability levels of tests of significance (*p<0,05).

Figures/Illustrations

Please include your figures at the text into sections to which they relate. Senex: Journal of Aging Studies reserves the right to reduce the size of illustrative material. Figures must be professionally lettered in a sans-serif type (e.g., Arial or Helvetica). Figures should have a short title under the shape.

ADDITIONAL POLICIES AND CONSIDERATIONS

Permissions for Illustrations and Figures

Permission to reproduce copyright material, for online publication in perpetuity, must be cleared and if necessary paid for by the author. Evidence in writing that such permissions have been secured from the rights-holder must be made available to the editors. It is also the author’s responsibility to include acknowledgments as stipulated by the particular institutions.

Ethics

Senex: Journal of Aging Studies expects that authors will observe high standards with respect to publication ethics. For example, the following practices are unacceptable:

  • Falsification or fabrication of data,
  • Plagiarism, including duplicate publication of the authors’ own work, in whole or in part without proper citation,

Allegations of unethical conduct will be discussed initially with the corresponding author. In the event of continued dispute, the matter will be referred to the relevant institutions for investigation and adjudication.

Statement of Informed Consent

All participant in researches have a right to privacy that should not be infringed without informed consent. Identifying information, including participants’ names, initials, or identification numbers, should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes. Participants (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Authors should identify individuals who provide writing assistance and disclose the funding source for this assistance. Identifying details should be omitted if they are not essential. Complete anonymity is difficult to achieve, however, and informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. For example, masking the eye region in photographs of participants is inadequate protection of anonymity. If identifying characteristics are altered to protect anonymity, such as in genetic pedigrees authors should provide assurance that alterations do not distort scientific meaning. Ethical responsibility for participation in research belongs to the author.

Conditions for submission

Submission of a manuscript implies that it has not been published or is not under consideration elsewhere. If accepted for Senex: Journal of Aging Studies, it is not to be published elsewhere without permission. As a further condition of publication, the corresponding author will be responsible, where appropriate, for certifying that permission has been received to use copyrighted instruments or software employed in the research and that human or animal subjects approval has been obtained.

Review Process

All papers published in Senex: Journal of Aging Studies are subject to peer review. Peer-reviewed by Editors, manuscripts are sent to at least two independent referees for evaluation. Reviewers advise on the originality and scientific merit of the paper; the editors make all final decisions on publication. The corresponding author will be notified via email with a decision and revision requirements, if applicable. Please ensure that email addresses are current for notification purposes. Papers that are outside the scope of the journal, that do not comply with the guidelines below or are otherwise judged to be unsuitable by the editor will be rejected without peer review.

Licenses and Copyright
It is a condition of publication in Senex: Journal of Aging Studies that authors grant an exclusive license to journal. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. As part of the license agreement, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that Senex: Journal of Aging Studies is acknowledged as the original place of publication.
By submitting a manuscript for consideration for publication, you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Senex: Journal of Aging Studies may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the submission.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

The Senex: Journal of Aging Studies adopts the open Access policy, and the journal published electronically (online) throughout the year.

Manuscripts are published in website after completing the independent blind review process. With the articles published throughout the year, the number of the journal relevant year will be completed by the end of December.

All articles published in Senex: Journal of Aging Studies are open to public use; and used freely, in free form, without permission from the publisher and author (s), and can be downloaded, distributed and used provided that the source is shown.

ETHICAL PRINCIPLES AND PUBLICATION POLICY
Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement

Senex Journal is committed to maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics and to meeting and upholding the following principles of Core Practices prepared in accordance with the guidelines and policies developed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for journal editors.
1. Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published, or scheduled and/or evaluated to be published in another journal.
2. Senex Journal adheres to the standards of COPE for publication ethics. Therefore, in cases of misconduct or violation of publication ethics, the journal will take the publication ethics flowcharts developed by COPE (https://publicationethics.org/resources/flowcharts) as a reference.
3. In accordance with the double-blind peer review process, Senex Journal preserves the anonymity of authors and reviewers when submitted articles are sent for review.
4. It is the journal’s responsibility to maintain the confidentiality of any information regarding authors. However, such information may be shared in a possible enquiry in order to investigate any allegations of misconduct. Senex Journal defines its principles regarding any allegations of misconduct in accordance with the guidelines prepared by the COPE and shares these principles with the stakeholders on its website.
5. Text recycling, that is using the chapters of a single text in various publications of the same author without any reference, is unacceptable for Senex Journal. In such cases, the journal acts according to the relevant guidelines determined by the COPE.
6. Senex Journal protects and supports freedom of expression under all circumstances. Moreover, the journal considers any racist, sexist, ageist or discriminatory content as hate speech and uses its right to refuse such contents without sending them for review.
7. In case of a conflict of interest regarding an article, the journal openly supports intellectual and ethical standards; and defines relevant ethical principles that authors, reviewers, editors and theme editors should adhere to.
8. In case of a conflict of interest regarding an article, the journal suspends the peer review process until the ambiguity is clarified; and it has the authority to request the Ethics Board Waiver Form, Interview Consent Form and other documents that need to be submitted from authors regarding their articles.
9. Senex Journal is sensitive and responsible for publishing edited contents, commentaries, apologies and refutations.
10. Editors and publishers of the journal are obliged to follow legal advices in case that repetitions in an article, that is coinciding texts in two different publications, violate any intellectual property rights.

Copyright Regulation and the Conflict of Interest Principle
1. Authors own the intellectual property rights of their own work; the copyrights of the produced material and the right to publish the article for the first time resides in Senex Journal; authors grant permission to the journal to share their works with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and the journal under the principles of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC 3.0).
2. Senex Journal considers possible conflicts of interest between its stakeholders to damage the publication ethics. Therefore, the journal defines the liabilities of all stakeholders in order to determine and prevent conflicts of interest.
3. Authors should sign the Publishing Agreement and the Conflict of Interest Forms with Senex Journal, including e-publishing, adaptation from one language to another, compromising collections from the selected works by the journal and upload them on the system during the submission process.

Principles for Handling Allegations of Misconduct
Senex Journal adopts COPE’s guidelines regarding “allegations of misconduct” in cases of misconduct and violation. Hence, the journal defines in detail the liabilities of the publisher, editors, reviewers, the Scientific Board and authors prior, during and after the publication process in the Publication Ethics.
1. In cases when an article is submitted to various publishers, comparing different versions of a single work submitted to various journals and explanations of authors and enquirers regarding the work in question enables to cooperate and make an effort in cases of suspected misconduct and violation and to act accordingly together with enquirers/authors and/or their institutions.
2. Having regard to the significance of confidentiality in scientific publication process, Senex Journal shares information regarding authors and reviewers only in order to prevent suspected misconducts and to fulfill the obligation to handle such cases.
3. Senex Journal editors and theme editors have to make the first enquiries in suspected cases before sharing such information. Thus, sharing information is only at stake when the author does not respond, provides insufficient explanation or the said allegation of misconduct might affect more than one journal.
4. If required, such information is only shared with editors whom are believed to have knowledge of the subject in question, and the shared information is limited with factual content only.
5. Editors and theme editors guarantee to protect confidentiality of communication to the greatest extent possible.

1. PUBLISHER
1. Özgür Arun is the publisher of Senex Journal.
2. The publisher guarantees that the stakeholders maintain the publication ethics principles, that access to the journal’s contents is uninterrupted and free of charge, and that the publications are archived and protected.
3. The publisher is obliged to take the necessary actions to clarify any suspected violations of publication ethics such as misconduct, plagiarism, conflict of interest and text recycling.

2. THE SCIENTIFIC BOARD
1. The Scientific Board of Senex Journal meets at least biannually.
2. Members of the Scientific Board accept the publication ethics principles and policies, and evaluate decisions regarding these principles and policies.
3. They determine themes and relevant editors for each theme.
4. They recommend members for the Scientific Board.
5. They make proposals in order to improve the national and international recognition of the journal.
6. Members of the Scientific Board have to inform editors of the journal to clarify any suspected violations of publication ethics such as misconduct, plagiarism, conflict of interest, copyright infringement and text recycling.
7. They make recommendations of citation indexes in which the journal might be included in order to improve its academic quality.

3. EDITORS
1. Submitted articles are evaluated regardless of authors’ age, race, ethnicity, gender, worldview and beliefs by the editors.
2. Editors make comprehensive and constructive evaluations of submitted articles.
3. The journal includes writings that do not require a peer review process such as essays and activity reviews. The difference between reviewed publications and the publications that do not require a peer review process is distinctly made clear. If required, editors might make comments and suggestions as to under which category submitted articles should be published, and share them clearly with authors. In such cases, authors and/or editors make the final decision.
4. Editors are responsible for making contact between authors and reviewers during the peer review process. They conduct the process by documenting the whole process meticulously from the date of submission to the date of publication with academic courtesy. If need be, editors feel free to give account of the whole peer review process for each article (provided that they look after the personal rights of authors and reviewers and the journal’s principles of confidentiality).
5. In case that two reviewers present different opinions on an article, editors have to seek the opinion of a third reviewer.
6. Editors should withdraw themselves from their editorial task if they are in conflicts of interest or in relationships that could lead to a conflict of interest regarding articles. Other editors who will continue as editorial staff shall report on the current status of the financial interests or other disputes (which may affect the editorial process) and withdraw themselves from the editorial staff in case of any conflict of interest. The editorial staff should not use any of the information obtained from the reviewed article for personal interest.
7. If editors find errors in a published article, and if this error invalidates the work or its important sections, it’s non-ethical, it contains plagiarism, they withdraw it. In this case the editors are responsible for providing a statement which clearly indicates the withdrawal of the article and an explanation of the reason for the withdrawal, besides, by providing a link which connects two versions, grant access to all readers in online platforms.

4. AUTHORS
1. Authors have academic, ethical and social responsibilities.
2. Authors cannot submit more than one article for the same issue of the journal.
3. Article submission dates are indicated in the call for papers for the upcoming issue. Submissions made after the deadline will not be evaluated.
4. Responsibility for ethical violations such as plagiarism, improper citation, missing a citation, not mentioning the names of grants and supporting institutions rests with the author. In such cases, articles are refused.
5. Authors should state the resources of the work/research support they get in their articles.
6. Authors are responsible for revealing any financial and personal relationships which may cause bias regarding their work when they submit a work in any kind or format. In this context, authors have to sign the Copyright Transfer and the Conflict of Interest Forms and upload them on the system during the submission process.
7. Authors are responsible for the fact that the ideas and expressions of the manuscript they submit for publication have not been used in their previously published works. If these ideas and expressions have already been used, they should be indicated by references in necessary places. Otherwise, the authors are obligated to correct overlapping parts upon the editors’ request or to do their part for publication of a correction if the article has been published.
8. Authors undertake that, submitted manuscripts to Senex Journal have not been previously published, or scheduled and/or evaluated to be published in another journal.
9. Authors should be able to render an account of validity and ethics for each part of the work.
10. If there are multiple authors who contribute to the work, the name order of these authors which has been sent during submission process should be co-decision of the authors.
11. The responsibilities to include only those who have active contributions in the work as authors, not to include non-active contributors among the authors, to sequence the authors, and to provide appropriate justification for any changes in the author sequence while evaluation process is in progress, rest with the author. The author should be able to provide explanation regarding all these matters if it is deemed necessary by the journal editors.
12. If the authors find errors and mistakes after publication of their work, they should immediately notify the editors of the journal so that appropriate action can be taken.
13. Authors cannot publish the same article or part of it in multiple journals without providing an appropriate reason, without permission or cross-reference. Authors are obligated to comply with the license and copyright transfer agreement they have signed.

5. REVIEWERS
1. They adopt double-blind peer review process and fulfill the requirements of it.
2. When a peer review has been requested, they should respond positively or negatively within a reasonable time period.
3. They should reveal if they do not have expertise on the subject regarding the work, or if they are able to evaluate only a part of the work.
4. They should accept carrying out the evaluation within a mutually agreed time period and they should inform in case of delay.
5. Reviewers should reveal to the editors any conflict of interest which may cause bias in their reviews regarding article, and they should refrain from reviewing the article in such cases.
6. Reviewers are responsible for informing the editors when they identify text recycling in a submitted article.
7. Reviewers should not use any information within the article which is about their field of interest, before the reviewed article is published.
8. If they think that they cannot make a fair and unbiased assessment, they should report it.
9. They should refuse to review manuscript if it is very similar to their work which they have been preparing or in the evaluation process.
10. During review;
- They should inform the journal if they notice a conflict of interest arise, which was non-existent when they accepted peer reviewing.
- They should keep all the writings and peer reviews confidential.
- They should ensure that their evaluations are only scientific; they will not be affected positively or negatively due to personal, financial or intellectual bias.
- They should not make personal comments or unjustified accusations against the author.
- They should be specific in their critics; for example they should concretize a general statement such as “a previous study”, this will help the editors to act fairly to the authors in the evaluation and decision-making process.
- They should remember it is author’s work and if the manuscript is written clearly, they should not attempt to rewrite it in the way they choose; but recommendations of clarification of expressions are important.
- They shouldn’t contact authors directly, without informing the journal.
- They should recognize the sensitivities that may arise out of writing in another language and express it in a respectful and appropriate manner.
- They should not recommend to reference works just to be visible or increase the number of referrals of themselves or their colleagues. If a recommendation is made, it should be justified scientifically.
11. After review;
- They should maintain keeping the work and the evaluation process confidential.
- In case a situation arises which may affect their comments and feedbacks, they should notify the journal.
- They should try to respond to requests from the journal for revision and reassessment.

6. THEME EDITORS
1. Theme editors of Senex Journal acknowledge the scientific publication ethics of the journal and fulfill their responsibilities accordingly.
2. Theme editors undertake the responsibilities of publication ethics which are described for the editors of the journal, from call for papers for the issue they prepare until the publication of that issue.
3. The theme editors are obligated to respond to the questions addressed by the journal and share the required documents if necessary under the code of ethics after publication of the issue they are responsible for.
4. Persons are also committed to fulfilling the responsibilities listed above when they accept theme editorship proposal of Senex Journal.
For ethical problems other than the circumstances which have been mentioned above, the guidelines on publication ethics of COPE (The Committee on Publication Ethics) will be taken as a reference.

Policy of Screening for Plagiarism
Ethical violations such as plagiarism are unacceptable by Senex Journal and it is primarily author(s)’s responsibility to ensure that submitted articles do not contain such violations.
All submitted articles are examined via Turnitin, and a similarity report is received prior to the peer review process.
If the similarity rate is 20% or more, editors share the results of the report with the author and reject the article without sending them for review.

Open Access Policy
Senex Journal provides open access for a continuous and free use of its content in order to produce beneficial results for humanity by increasing the global exchange of information. Therefore, all the articles published by the journal are available at https://dergipark.org.tr/en/pub/senex , http://www.senexjournal.org.tr/archive .
In this context, Senex Journal accepts, within the open access definition of the Budapest Open Access Initiative and on condition that proper citation of references are provided in accordance with scientific ethics and rules, that the peer-reviewed and published scientific literature can be accessed, read, downloaded, copied, distributed, printed, scanned, linked to the full texts, indexed, transmitted as data to software, and used for any legal purposes via internet without any financial, legal and technical obstacles.
Moreover, all authors whose articles are published in the journal are deemed to have accepted open source access and the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Licence.
Senex Journal gives authors the only restriction authority on the reproduction and distribution of published articles and the only copyright role in this regard.

No fee is demanded for the submission, evaluation and publication processes of the articles.

Senex: Journal of Aging Studies is an international, peer-reviewed, and open access journal published online every year. After completing the process of double blind peer-review, the manuscripts are published here and its own website. Submissions of manuscripts to Senex: Journal of Aging Studies, review and publication processes are carried out free of charge.
