Abstract

This article discusses the film practice of Dziga Vertov by examining images of railways, showing how his artistic practice was influenced by the October Revolution and the Civil War. It establishes a relationship between the Taylorian organization of railways and the formal dynamics of Vertov’s aesthetics. The first part discusses the crucial role played by the railways during the October Revolution. It also analyses how Lenin’s struggle to politicize the workers was related to the railway system. Thus, the socio-cultural roots of the Bolsheviks’ obsession with railways are revealed. The second part introduces the dynamic art of Dziga Vertov. It shows how the political situation after the October Revolution forced him to invent new cinematic forms. The third part analyses and contextualizes his early agit-train experiments. The fourth and final part demonstrates that the railways and the cinema intersected at the Taylorisation of the labour process.

Ekim Devriminin İlk Yıllarında Demiryolu Organizasyonu ve İmajların Organizasyonu Arasındaki İlişki: Dziga Vertov’un Politik Estetiği

Abstract

Bu makale, Dziga Vertov’un film pratiğinin Ekim Devrimi ve ardından gelen İç Savaş yıllarının kargaşasından nasıl etkilendiğini demiryolu imgesi üzerinden tartışıyor. Çalışmada demiryolu sisteminin Taylorist organizasyonu ile Dziga Vertov estetiğinin biçimsel dinamiği arasında ilişki kuruluyor. Bu sayede Dziga Vertov’un, kapitalist olmayan bir emek sürecini sinematik formlar aracılığıyla nasıl teşvik ettiği gösteriliyor. Birinci kısımda demiryolu imgesinin Ekim Devrimi ve ertesinde oynadığı kritik rol ele alınıyor. Lenin’in işçileri politikleştirme adımlarının demiryolu sistemiyle kesişmesi analiz ediliyor. Böylelikle Bolşeviklerin demiryolu sistemi ve trenlere olan takıntılarının sosyo- kültürel nedenleri gösteriliyor. İkinci kısımda Dziga Vertov ve Kinokların dinamik ve özgün sanat pratiği tanıtılıyor. Ekim Devrimi ve ertesindeki politik düğümde, sinemayı politikleştirebilmek için nasıl yeni sinematik biçimler icat etmesi gerekildiği tartışılıyor. Üçüncü kısımda da Vertov’un Agit-trenler ile yaptığı erken sinema deneyleri inceleniyor ve tarihsel bağlam üzerine oturtuluyor. Bu tarihsel konjonktürde sinema ve demiryolu sisteminin, emeğin Taylorizasyonu sorunu üzerinde kesiştiği gösteriliyor.
