Ali Karadoğan and S. Ruken Öztürk’s three-volume Türkiye’de Sinema Sansürünün Tarihi (1932–1988): Sansür Karar Defterleri Üzerine Bir İnceleme (The history of cinema censorship in Turkey: A review of film-censorship registers, 1932–1988) provides a striking and comprehensive overview of the history of film censorship in Turkey. The book, published by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and the Tourism Directorate General for Copyright, presents a breakdown of film records from 1932 to 1988 and of 96 registers of censorship decisions. These long-classified registers contain the hitherto unknown rationale and arguments employed by censorship commissions in denying permission, or granting only conditional acceptance, for the shooting and screening of films. The content of these commission decisions shines a light onto the history of film and screenplay censorship in Turkey and offers a novel framework for interpreting the country’s cultural history, its changing political climate, and its reigning value system. The decisions dealing with foreign films in the country also provide an innovative new window onto Turkey’s international relations and domestic policies. Karadoğan and Öztürk’s important work will no doubt be of great use as a reference for a wide range of scholars in the social sciences, particularly those in film studies, where it will contribute to a layered reading of Turkish cinema history and fill a significant gap in contemporary Turkish history and cultural history as well.
