İMPARATOR DIOCLETIANUS’UN POLİTİK İRADESİ

Abstract

Geç Roma İmparatorluk tarihinin değişim-dönüşüm aşamalarını içine alan Diocletianus dönemi, Roma İmparatorluk tarihi çalışmalarının temel konularından birisi olmuştur. İmparator Diocletianus’un hükümdarlık yıllarında yaşanan süreçler konuya ilişkin modern araştırmaların ana başlıklarını oluşturmuşlardır. Bu başlıklar, imparatorluğun iç ve dış tehlikelere maruz kaldığı “3. yy. Krizi” (235-284), Diocletianus tarafından krize çözüm olarak sunulan “Tetrarşi” ve aynı dönemde artan Hıristiyan nüfusa karşı uygulana “Büyük Zulüm” sürecidir. Diocletianus’un askeri, ekonomik, dini ve idari reformlarının etkisi kendisinden sonra da devam etmiş ve başarısı literatüre geçmiştir. Tasarladığı dörtler erki ile askeri anarşi, iç savaş, barbar tehlikesi ve veraset sorununa aynı anda çözüm ara-yan Diocletianus’un en dikkat çeken eylemi tahttan feragat etmesidir. Antik yazarların benzersiz bulduğu emeklilik kararının nedenleri modern tarihçilerin araştırma konusu haline gelmiş ve sürece etkisi tartışılmıştır. Kaynaklarda büyük zulmü kışkırtan ve imparatoru feragate zorlayan kişi olarak caesar Galerius’un gösterilmesi, Diocletianus’un karar mekanizmasının sorgulanmasını gerektirmiştir. Bu çalışmada Diocletianus’un karakter portresi karşılaştırmalı analiz yöntemiyle değerlendirilerek Galerius’un imparatorun kritik meselelere dair istenci üzerindeki etkisi ve muhtemel baskısı araştırılacaktır. Bu bağlamda Diocletianus’un politik iradesini kullanabilme potansiyeli özellikle tahttan feragat kararı odağında antik kaynaklar ve modern literatür ışığında irdelenecektir.
