Military Revolution in the Early Modern Period: Strategic Transforma-tions, Technological Developments, and Institutional Structuring

Abstract

This study is grounded in the "military revolution" theory initially proposed by Michael Roberts in the 1950s and further developed by historians such as Geoffrey Parker. It sys-tematically examines the profound transformations in the military sphere during the Early Modern Period, exploring how these changes not only reshaped Europe but also triggered a paradigm shift on a global scale. The widespread adoption of firearms on the battlefield, advancements in military technology, and particularly the radical changes in the organiza-tional structure of infantry units profoundly redefined war strategies and the structural organization of armies during this era. In this context, the replacement of the symbolic cavalry forces and the institution of chivalry from the Middle Ages by infantry units, the decisive role of firearms on the battlefield, the emergence of new fortification systems such as the trace italienne, and the progress in logistical infrastructure should be regarded as fundamental elements of the military revolution. Indeed, it is a well-established historical and technical fact that the impacts of these military transformations were not confined to the battlefield alone but also fundamentally altered the bureaucratic structures, economic resources, and international power dynamics of states. The establishment of centralized armies and the financing of standing forces accelerated the formation of modern states by enhancing states' tax collection mechanisms and administrative capacities. Within this framework, the present research investigates the decisive role of the military revolution in the emergence of modern states during the Early Modern Period from a historical perspec-tive. It comprehensively analyzes the mutual interaction between military strategies and political-economic structures, demonstrating how they shaped one another. Furthermore, it highlights that the theory of military revolution offers a comprehensive framework not only for understanding the history of warfare but also for elucidating the evolution of sta-tes and the shaping of the international system.

Erken Modern Dönemde Askerî Devrim: Stratejik Dönüşümler, Teknolojik Gelişmeler ve Kurumsal Yapılanma

Abstract

Bu çalışma Michael Roberts’ın 1950’lerde ortaya attığı ve Geoffrey Parker gibi tarihçiler tarafından geliştirilen “askerî devrim” teorisini temel alarak, Erken Modern Dönem’de askerî alanda yaşanan köklü dönüşümleri, bu dönüşümlerin yalnızca Avrupa’da değil, küresel ölçekte nasıl bir paradigma değişimine yol açtığını sistematik bir şekilde ele almak-tadır. Özellikle ateşli silahların savaş alanında yaygınlaşması, askerî teknolojideki ilerle-meler ve özellikle piyade birliklerinin örgütlenme biçimindeki radikal değişimler, bu dö-nemde savaş stratejilerini ve orduların yapısal organizasyonunu derinlemesine yeniden şekillendirmiştir. Bu bağlamda Orta Çağ’ın simgesel süvari güçlerinin ve şövalyelik kuru-munun yerini piyade birliklerinin alması, ateşli silahların savaş alanında belirleyici bir rol üstlenmesi, trace italienne gibi yeni tahkimat sistemlerinin ortaya çıkışı ve lojistik altyapı-da kaydedilen ilerlemeler, askeri devrimin temel unsurları olarak değerlendirilmelidir. Hat-ta öyle ki, bu askerî dönüşümlerin etkilerinin yalnızca savaş alanıyla sınırlı kalmayıp, devletlerin bürokratik yapılarını, ekonomik kaynaklarını ve uluslararası güç dengelerini köklü bir şekilde dönüştürdüğü tarihsel ve teknik bağlamda bilinen bir gerçektir. Nitekim merkezi orduların kurulması ve sürekli orduların finansmanı, devletlerin vergi toplama mekanizmalarını ve idari kapasitelerini artırarak modern devletlerin oluşum sürecini hız-landırmıştır. Belirtilen çerçevede elinizdeki araştırma, Erken Modern Dönem’de yaşanan askerî devrimin modern devletlerin ortaya çıkışındaki belirleyici rolünü tarihsel bir perspek-tifle inceleyerek, bu dönüşümlerin askerî stratejiler ile siyasi-ekonomik yapılar arasındaki karşılıklı etkileşimini ve birbirini nasıl şekillendirdiğini kapsamlı bir şekilde analiz etmekte; askerî devrim teorisinin yalnızca savaş tarihine değil, aynı zamanda devletlerin evrimine ve uluslararası sistemin şekillenmesine dair kapsamlı bir çerçeve sunduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
