Abstract

Nasser's Hegemony And Nasserist Politicians: The Mechanisms Of Ideological Dissemination And Egyptian Foreign Policy In The 1950s Middle East

Year 2025, Volume: 9 Issue: 2, 1737 - 1766
https://doi.org/10.30561/sinopusd.1773304

Abstract

This article examines the regional dynamics of the Middle East during the Cold War, with a particular focus on the influence of Nasserism under the leadership of Gamal Abdel Nas-ser. The study aims to explore how Egypt’s foreign policy was significantly reshaped in favor of Egyptian interests through Nasser’s engagement with regional political elites. The central question addressed is the extent of Nasser’s involvement in shaping foreign policies beyond Egypt -specifically, how Nasserist politicians and bureaucrats in various Middle Eastern countries adopted and implemented his ideological and political vision. The article argues that Nasser’s ideology and strategies not only opened space for like-minded leaders across the region but also consolidated his dominance among Nasserist elites. The analysis focuses on Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, and follows a chronological approach based on key events such as the 1955 Baghdad Pact, the 1956 Suez Crisis, and the 1958 formation of the United Arab Republic.
