A MULTI-PHASE RESIDENTIAL AREA AT ADRAMYTTEION: A FIRST ASSESSMENT OF A ROMAN PERIOD ATRIUM-CENTERED RESIDENCE AND AN ADJACENT MULTI-PHASE COMPLEX
Abstract
This article presents a first assessment of recent excavations at Adramytteion (Ören), where an atrium-centered Roman residential complex and an adjacent multi-phase complex were uncovered. The Roman complex is organized around a central atrium, with mosaic-paved reception rooms and service and water-related spaces connected within the same plan. Pipes, channels, drains, and floor treatments show that water management was an important part of the building. Stratigraphic evidence suggests at least two main phases: an earlier phase in which the atrium functioned as an open or semi-open court, and a later phase in which parts of the complex were repaired and reorganized after a destruction event. The adjacent complex preserves a longer sequence, from Hellenistic foundations to Roman modifications and a late phase marked by storage and workshop activity, including pithos installations. These remains can be compared with other elite domestic complexes in western Asia Minor, especially in the combination of central court planning, reception spaces, and water-related installations. Focusing on plan, function, and architectural change, this article offers a preliminary framework for future work. Detailed study of the villa type and the mosaics will be presented separately.
