Project-Based Practices in Translation Education: An Examination of Undergraduate Programs in Turkey

Abstract

In today’s translation industry, translation processes have largely evolved into a project-based structure. As a result, translators are expected to approach translation tasks as projects and to work either individually or collaboratively in translation projects. To meet these expectations, they need to understand project logic and become familiar with project-based work. This study aims to examine the scope and curricular placement of project-based translation courses offered in undergraduate translation programs in Türkiye. For this purpose, the curricula of 15 programs—selected through simple random sampling from a total of 72 English Translation and Interpreting, English French Translation and Interpreting, and Translation Studies (English) programs across Türkiye—were analyzed through document analysis. The examined courses were categorized into three main groups: applied written translation courses, courses related to translation technologies, and project-based courses. The research questions are: (1) what types of project-based translation practice courses are offered in undergraduate translation programs, and how are they represented in the curricula? and (2) what kinds of tasks are assigned to students in these courses, and which skills are targeted in the expected learning outcomes? Findings indicate that project-based translation courses occupy a limited place in curricula. Technology use remains minimal, and learning outcomes do not sufficiently reflect contributions to skills such as collaboration, analytical thinking, critical inquiry, self-awareness, problem-solving, autonomous learning, responsibility, effective research, applying theory to practice, project management, and digital literacy. The study suggests that project-based translation practices should be integrated more systematically and widely into undergraduate programs.
