Abstract

THE CONSTRUCTION OF DISCOURSE THROUGH TRANSLATION IN LITERATURE: AN ANALYSIS OF THE HOURS

Year 2025, Issue: Çeviribilim Özel Sayısı II, 827 - 846, 25.03.2025
https://doi.org/10.29110/soylemdergi.1601978

Abstract

This study focuses on three translations of The Hours by Michael Cunningham, originally published in 1998 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Pen Faulkner Prize in 1999. The Hours highlights the convergence of three women's narratives (Virginia Woolf, Laura Brown, Clarissa Vaughan) over three periods (1923, 1951, 2001), addressing gender roles and the struggles of women confined within places to navigate the patriarchal structure of society. The corpus of the study consists of Saatler, published by Can Publishing in 2000 and translated by İlknur Özdemir; Saatler, published by Kırmızı Kedi Publishing House in 2017 and translated by İlknur Özdemir; and Saatler, published by Kırmızı Kedi Publishing House in 2024 and translated by Öykü Gizem Gökgül. The translation of Özdemir in 2000 received the translation prize of Dünya Book Magazine. In line with this, the current study seeks to investigate translation as a mechanism facilitating the circulation of discourse and to demonstrate the impact of othering discourse inside the literary system. The study reaches out to attain these purposes through the othering discourse strategies put forward by Nikolas Coupland (2010), which serve as the theoretical framework. The study employs critical discourse analysis as its methodological perspective. Following the study's introduction, the interplay between translation and discourse and the concepts of the other and othering, are addressed before the theoretical framework is presented. The methodology section is included after the theoretical framework. Subsequently, the source text and the target texts are introduced, and the background of the work is presented. A comparative qualitative analysis of the source and target texts is performed in the analysis part. The discussion and conclusion sections of the paper address the research questions. The conclusion highlights that Özdemir's translations contained a greater amount of othering discourse compared to Gökgül's translations.
