ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-BASED SONG TRANSLATION: A STUDY ON PRESERVING EMOTIONAL CONTEXT

Abstract

This study utilizes sentiment analysis to evaluate the extent to which emotional integrity is preserved in Turkish translations of English and French songs created by artificial intelligence. The analysis focuses on Adele’s "Someone Like You", translated from English to Turkish, and Cœur de Pirate’s "Mistral Gagnant", translated from French to Turkish. AI-generated translations of both songs were analyzed using a Python-based sentiment analysis tool. In addition to identifying shifts in positive, negative and neutral sentiments within the verses during the translation process, a quantitative assessment of these emotions was conducted. For instance, although minor emotinal shifts were observed in certain lines of the AI-generated translation, which was designed to adhere to rhyme, syllable structure, emotional tone and musical alignment, it was found that no significant deviations occurred in the overall structure of the songs. Furthermore, the study highlighted the localization of nostalgic elements in "Mistral Gagnant". The culturally specific symbol "Mistral Gagnant" was translated into Turkish as "Horoz Şekerleri" (Rooster Lollipops), yielding differing sentiment scores. While "Mistral Gagnant" conveyed a melancholic nostalgia, "Horoz Şekerleri" was interpreted as a more positive nostalgic symbol in the target language. This study demonstrates the potential of artificial intelligence in song translations, showcasing its viability as a stakeholder in this industry. Additionally, it underscores the potential of sentiment analysis as a tool for assessing translation quality, offering insights that contribute to both the translation industry and future academic research.

Yapay Zekâ Tabanlı Şarkı Çevirisi: Duygusal Bağlamın Korunması Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Bu çalışmada İngilizce ve Fransızca şarkıların yapay zekâ tarafından Türkçeye yapılan çevirilerinde duygusal bütünlüğün ne ölçüde korunduğunu değerlendirmek amacıyla duygu analizi (sentiment analysis) yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışma kapsamında İngilizce'den Türkçe'ye çevrilen Adele'in "Someone Like You" şarkısı ve Fransızca'dan Türkçe’ye çevrilen "Cœur de Pirate"ın Mistral Gagnant şarkıları seçilmiştir. Her iki şarkının yapay zekâ tarafından gerçekleştirilen çevirileri Python tabanlı duygu analizi aracı kullanılarak analize tabi tutulmuştur. Kaynak dilde yazılmış şarkıların mısralarındaki pozitif, negatif ve nötr duyguların çeviri sürecinde değişimini tespit etmenin yanı sıra bu duyguların sayısal bir değerlendirmesi yapılmıştır. Örneğin, yapay zekâdan kafiye, hece, duygusal ton ve notalara göre yapılması istenen çevirinin bazı mısralarında hafif ton değişiklikleri görülmüş olmakla birlikte şarkıların genelinde büyük bir sapma olmadığını tespit edilmiştir. Buna ek olarak "Mistral Gagnant" şarkısında ise, nostaljik öğelerin yerelleştirilmesi dikkat çekmektedir. Fransız kültürüne özgü "Mistral Gagnant" sembolü, Türkçede "Horoz Şekerleri" olarak çevrilmiş; ancak bu iki sembolden farklı puanlar elde edilmiştir. "Mistral Gagnant" melankolik bir nostalji taşırken "Horoz Şekerleri" erek dilde daha pozitif bir nostalji sembolü olmuştur. Çalışma, yapay zekâ ile yapılan şarkı çevirilerinin kullanılabilirliğini ortaya koyarak bu endüstrideki paydaşlardan biri olabileceği gösterilmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra, duygu analizinin de çeviride bir kalite ölçüm aracı olarak potansiyeli gösterilmiş olup elde edilen sonuçların hem çeviri endüstrisine hem de ileride yapılacak akademik çalışmalara katkı sağlayacağını göstermektedir.
