Motherhood 2.0 in Türkiye: Evaluation of the Virtual Family Education Program for Mothers

Abstract

The objective of this study was to implement a family education program with mothers to raise parental awareness about children's technology use, to support healthy regulation of this use, and to enhance parents' knowledge and skills for preventing excessive use.. The study employed a quantitative method, specifically a quasi-experimental design with a single-group pre-test-post-test approach. In this context, the researcher delivered a five session training program via the Zoom platform between May 8 and June 5, 2024. The aim of the program was to enhance the participants' awareness and competencies in digital literacy, control, ethics, and innovation roles. Sixteen mothers participated in the study, with ages ranging from 36 to 46 (M = 40. Six of the participants were employed, and the average number of children per mother was two. The results indicated that maternal digital parenting self-efficacy remained consistent across different employment statuses, educational levels, and number of children. Following the training, a non-statistically significant increase was observed in the mothers’ digital literacy and digital security levels. However, no change was detected in their digital communication levels. The findings suggested that the mothers’ digital literacy levels were higher than those reported in the existing literature. It is thought that this study will contribute to theoretical and practical studies in the field in terms of module content and implementation. In future studies, it is recommended that male parents participate, comparisons are made with the control group, and such trainings are continued by updating the content according to the requirements.

Türkiye’de Annelik 2.0: Annelere Yönelik Sanal Aile Eğitim Programının Etkililik Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı ebeveynlerin çocuklarının teknoloji kullanımının farkına varmalarına, çocuklarının teknoloji kullanımını sağlıklı bir şekilde denetlemelerine ve aşırı kullanımı önlemelerine yardımcı olacak bilgi ve beceri kazandırmayı hedefleyen annelere yönelik bir aile eğitim programının etkililiğini sınamaktır. Çalışma nicel araştırma yöntemi yarı deneysel desenle gerçekleştirilen, tek gruplu, ön test-son test türündedir. Bu kapsamda 16 anneye farkındalık, dijital okuryazarlık, kontrol, etik ve yenilikçilik rolleri kazandırmak için araştırmacı tarafından 8 Mayıs - 5 Haziran 2024 tarihleri arasında Zoom platformu üzerinden 5 oturumda eğitim verilmiştir. Annelerin yaşları 36-46 arasındadır (ort. 40), altısı çalışmaktadır ve ortalama çocuk sayıları ikidir. Annelerin çalışma durumlarına, eğitim düzeyine ve sahip oldukları çocuk sayısına göre dijital ebeveynlik öz yeterliliğinin değişmediği görülmüştür. Eğitim sonrasında annelerin dijital okuryazarlık düzeyleri, dijital güvenlik düzeyleri istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmamakla birlikte artmış, dijital iletişim düzeyleri değişmemiştir. Bu çalışma sonucunda annelerin dijital okuryazarlıklarının alan yazınındaki bulgulara kıyasla yükseldiği görülmüştür. Bu çalışmanın alandaki kuramsal ve uygulamalı çalışmalara modül içerikleri ve uygulanışı yönünden katkı sunacağı düşünülmektedir. Gelecek çalışmalarda erkek ebeveynlerin katılımının sağlanması, kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırma yapılması ve içeriğin gereksinimlere göre güncellenerek bu tür eğitimlerin sürdürülmesi önerilmektedir.
