Abstract

The aim of the study is to compare the chronic effects of eight-week respiratory muscle exercises with deviced and respiratory muscle exercises without device applied to healthy individuals on respiratory functions, functional capacity and quality of life. A total of 30 women aged 55-65 participated in the study voluntarily. Participants were divided into three groups consisting of 10 people: powerbreathe group (PG), triflo group (TG) and pursed lip group (PLG) to do the exercises. Respiratory parameters of the participants were determined by spirometry, functional capacities were determined by the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and fatigue levels at the end of the 6MWT were determined by the modified borg scale (MBS), and their quality of life was determined by the short form of the SF-36 scale. Participants performed 30 repetitions of respiratory muscle exercise in the morning and evening every day of the week for 8 weeks. Repeated measures two-way ANOVA test was used to examine the results of different protocols, pre- and post-test measurements, and protocol*time interaction effect. As a result of the study, in the intra-group comparison of respiratory parameters, there was a statistically significant difference in favor of the post-test in PG in FVC, PG and TG in FEV1 and MVV, and PG, TG and PLG in FEV1/FVC% (p<0.05 ), no difference was observed in the comparison of these parameters between groups. While there was a statistically significant difference in favor of the posttest in PG and PLG of 6MWT and MBS (p<0.05), when comparing these parameters between groups, it was determined that PG provided a higher improvement than the other groups. In the intergroup comparison of the physical role difficulty and emotional role difficulty sub-dimensions of quality of life, it was determined that PG had a statistically significantly higher score than PLG.
