Abstract

Abstract

Digitalization and technological advancements have a profound impact not only on how individuals and countries access information but also on their energy consumption patterns. Considering the impacts of factors such as internet use and financial development on electricity consumption during this transformation process is crucial for economic and environmental sustainability. This study aims to examine the impacts of financial development and internet use on electricity consumption in South Korea during the 1990-2023 period using the Fourier Augmented ARDL (FAARDL) method. The findings indicate a long-term cointegration relationship among electricity consumption, individual internet use, financial development, and economic growth. The FAARDL results reveal that in the long run, increases in internet use, financial development, and growth increase electricity consumption. The findings of this study reveal that individual internet use and financial development increase energy demand, highlighting the importance of considering these factors in the development of sustainable energy policies. By examining the impacts of financial development and internet use on electricity consumption through the example of South Korea, this study contributes to the literature by providing important implications regarding energy consumption dynamics for technology-intensive economies.
