Research on the Effect of Fear of Missing Out on Academic Procrastination Behavior

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of students' fear of missing out on academic procrastination behavior levels. The students of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (N=4147) of a state university in Konya province constituted the universe of the study. In this study, which was conducted using the survey method, one of the quantitative research methods, questioning technique and convenience sampling method were preferred. Surveys in which Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences students could participate on a voluntary basis were conducted face to face. 590 students were reached and a survey was conducted with 548 volunteers. As a result of the feedback, the number of data that could be used in the research was determined as 532 (n=532) and was analyzed with the SPSS 23.0 program. Within the scope of the findings obtained from the study, it was concluded that fear of missing out has a statistically significant and positive effect on academic procrastination behavior levels. In addition, it was determined fear of missing out had a statistically significant and positive effect on the sub-dimensions of academic procrastination behavior, namely irresponsibility, negative perception of teachers and academic perfectionism. As a result of the literature review, it is believed that the gap in the literature will be filled since there are few studies that examine the two variables together.

Gelişmeleri Kaçırma Korkusunun Akademik Erteleme Davranışına Etkisi Araştırması

Abstract

Bu çalışma, öğrencilerin gelişmeleri kaçırma korkusunun akademik erteleme davranış düzeyleri üzerindeki etkisini incelemeyi amaçlamıştır. Konya ilinde bulunan bir devlet üniversitesinin İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesinin (N=4147) öğrenim gören öğrencileri çalışmanın evrenini oluşturmuştur. Nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden anket yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilen bu çalışmada soru sorma tekniği ve kolayda örnekleme yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. İİBF öğrencilerinin gönüllülük esasına bağlı olarak katılım sağlayabilecekleri anketler, yüz yüze gerçekleştirilmiştir. Öğrenciler arasından 590 kişiye ulaşılmış ve gönüllü 548 kişiye anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Geri dönüşler neticesinde araştırmada kullanılabilecek veri sayısı 532 (n=532) olarak belirlenmiş ve SPSS 23.0 programı ile analize tabi tutulmuştur. Çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular kapsamında, gelişmeleri kaçırma korkusunun akademik erteleme davranış düzeyleri üzerinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ve pozitif yönde bir etkisi olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca, gelişmeleri kaçırma korkusunun, akademik erteleme davranışının alt boyutları olan sorumsuzluk, öğretmenlere ilişkin olumsuz algı ve akademik mükemmeliyetçilik üzerinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ve pozitif yönde bir etkisi olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Literatür incelemeleri neticesinde iki değişkenin birlikte ele alındığı az çalışma olması dolayısıyla alanyazındaki boşluğun doldurulacağına inanılmaktadır.
